That'd be a starting place. I still think that with the voltage dropping as RPMs increase is a regulator that is unable to handle the voltage increase from the alternator.

Like Brant said it was probably a poor connection that caused the regulator to fail. Give cleaning the connections a try. An emery board or even a pink eraser on a pencil works good for cleaning the spades, If you just be sure the female connectors are tight you should be good.

That last line sounded kinda sexy didn't it?

Awesome! I'll tell him to start with a tube of dielectric grease and just pop apart and reconnect all of the connectors. Or is there a better method?

I'm gonna reverse that...............sounds like bad connections causing high resistance, which WILL eventually result in a bad regulator/rectifier if not addressed.

    850 charging system?

My friend gets 13.4v at idle, but drops to 12.4v at 1/4-1/2 throttle, and battery dies within a mile of riding. Any suggestions what to fix/replace first?
