  • 1977 kz1000 complete rebuild project.

Hello guys, Sorry its not an XS but my xs I got from greengoon3 hasnt had a reason for me to mess with it yet.

Well ive posted this on another site and had a lack of feedback so I thought I would put it up on here. Again sorry its not a Yamaha.

Well it may not be the most exciting build thread to date or have any thing that you guys havent seen but I thought that I would put this on here to start to get involved with this site. I have been trolling on here for a little bit and am blown away about how bad ass you guys can make these old bikes look, Im amazed. Ive been looking at my old beat kz in the corner of the garage thinking someday. Well to day I decided that I will never get there if i dont start. Here is what I have to work with. I know its not much now but once it was a nice bike.

Believe it or not this pic is the same bike about 4 years ago when i had it in Hawaii.

The engine ran like crap once i got it back. It smoked ran bad and lost power once it came up to operating temp. When I pulled the exhaust there was oil in one pipe and just a little oil in another. The pic below shows the messed up cyl. in that cyl the the wrist pin had to be driven out after removing the c-clips. The other cyl wrist pins came right out. Besides the wear marks in the cyl there is ghost images of the piston and the circles that you see in the cyl and actually cut into the bore. The engine has been rebuilt once from what it seems like cause it has Wiseco pistons in it.

It has a LONG history but the short story was it turned up on norfolks craigslist blown up and crashed with no title.cause it was still in my name a few months after that I ended up getting it back. Just too much history to let it go to the srap yard. the long story is in one of my other posts.

This is my first full on build. Ive had bikes and done some work and a few mods but this is going to be a learning experience so I apologize for dumb or ignorant questions in advance.

Nightingale and myself started a facebook page 757 garage built motorcycles and I found a guy on there that has a kz750 pile of parts that Im going to meet up with tomorrow. Anybody know how much stuff can interchange? Carbs?

Nice bike! I'm told you can get anything you need for it. It would surprise me if the KZ750 were much help. It's probably like buying an XS750 hoping for XS1100 parts. There will be interchange parts, but likely not many that you need.

        .

With the availability of parts, you should be able to do it for less than that. You may have to do it yourself.

Nice bike you have there. You've already done most of the hard work in breaking the engine down. A little measuring and some shop work on the jugs and your ready to start reassembly.
How does the head look ?
Might get away with cleaning and lapping the valves and your good to go.

IMHO if your able to take a bike down that far without using a BFH or breaking anything, all but the refinishing of the jugs can be done by you.

Sometimes it takes a whole tank of gas before you can think straight.

Hey Chuck, I picked up a honing stone rig from Harbor Frieght and you can borrow it. If the jugs are that scratched up, then it might be worth it to try to hone the cylinders to get rid of the scratches. If you don't take off too much material, and they're still in spec, then you can get by with putting it back together then. (worth a try at least)
Another option is to get another set of jugs/pistons too.
