Did the 87 model Virago have the same starter issues as the earlier models? There is an 87 1100 close to me for sale I am considering, I'd like to know what I might be getting into since it sat for 12 yrs and is non-running.

Short answer, No.
Here are some links I have saved as I'm going to do the starter upgrade on my '84 XV700.
I bought the parts a couple years back and I believe they came from an 1100
IIRC the blocks are all the same so the later side covers, that house the newer style starter system, fit.

Thanks Schming, going to look at it tomorrow. Is there a way to tell for sure if it is an 1100 versus the 700? Anyone know or have a link to the VIN codes?
Not sure, but it seems the air cleaner should have 1100 emblem on it and a part that is crosshatched, this one seems to be solid from the pics.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Thanks Phil! I got a page out of a Clymers that had all the VINS.
Turns out it is a 85 XV700. IT has rust on everything not painted. The bars are bent, the right mirror is gone, the right foot peg is gone, the left bar the shift mechanism mounts to is bent to the point the shifter can not travel to up shift. I pulled it loose enough to get the bike in neutral. Good news is the rear wheel turned freely. The engine appears to be completely seized, the front brakes are frozen locked up. Tires actually have flat spots in them from sitting so long. The steering head bearings are very stiff. One shock is gone.
Its hard to think of a part you could sell if you wanted to part it out. I am just not sure it is a project worth delving into at this point. I might see if he will give it to me, but no way could I pay more than $10 for it.Last edited by DGXSER; 12-02-2013, 06:40 PM.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

there's not much around that is without value in the right market.
IF the bike has it's papers and IF the frame is straight
Check the XV list for an XV700 owner with a good bike and no papers and being screwed by the DMV Nazis.
