Hi I know someone who's looking for a bike. We see quite a few 1100 vstars for sale from 1999 to 2002 or so, anyone have any knowledge on these as far as reliability etc?

v-star info
I just sold my '07 v-star 1100. didn't ride it much after getting my '80 xs1100 special. the bikes haven't changed very much over the years. the vstar forum contains huge amounts of data on the bike, lots of "opinions" from many riders. some of those guys are very knowledgeable and accurate. lots of mods available. I sold mine after putting about 10,000 miles on it, not a bad bike but the xs1100 actually blows it away in every category. the xs is amazingly smoother and much more comfortable on long rides. the v-star vibrates a lot over about 70mph. very reliable, not much required for maintenance. however, the front exhaust header must be removed in order to change the oil filter. the "engineer" who designed that screwup should be shot. it's a big pain in the ass. and changing the rear shock absorber spring preload(either up or down) is even worse. I took mine to a Yamaha dealer to do it and after about 30 minutes they said they couldn't do it either. same fool "engineer" I guess. the bikes hold their value pretty well if they haven't been bobbed or chopped or otherwise screwed with. if you get a good stock one you'll probably like it.

If there are more than three bolts holding it on there, it is most likely a very important part!

The belt drive sucks. The belts are expensive and hard to change.
