  • Rabid transit fairing

Hey everyone, this is my first post to the forums, wasnt quite sure where to put this. I recently traded my non-running 79 xs11 project for a running 77 xs750. My goal is to do a cafe and the 750 seems better suited for the style. The bike I got came with a rabid transit fairing, I knew nothing about these before and my local motorcycle used parts shop doesn't even want to touch it because he said it's almost too rare to keep there (I can only assume this is true).
So in the end I guess I'm just looking for some info about this fairing and how much they generally go for in pretty good shape. I have pics of it on the bike, they're just on my phone at the moment. Thanks everyone.

I have one (two actually) though neither is mounted as I haven't had time to finalize the mount.

The website above will give you some history. They are most commonly found on BMWs but I have seen them on every type of bike including Gold Wings. Good condition probably $200-500 if you have wiring and windscreen and lowers. I have seen pristine ones offered for over $600 but have not seen those as sold prices.

The bike above is an old member here who put together a nice example.

They are very efficient aerodynamically and quite nice looking in my opinion.

Thanks for all of the info. It is a good looking piece, much better than the vetter! Maybe I'll see how it looks with a nice cafe seat.

Don Vesco fairings are hard to come by and worth some bucks. It does look waaay better than the Vetter designs...I'd use it....

I think I may end up selling it so I can fund the transformation of this bike, money is a bit tight right now.

Ian, this bike was offered to me as a trade, there're a few things about it that make me think that the original owner tried to or did make it a race bike at one point. Also, you could definitely help if you know how to convert it from points type ignition! I'm an auto tech but I was born into the world of fuel injection!

Yeah, it's actually a fairly easy swap. All you have to do is swap out the pickup coils and splice into the harness. Here is a link the the 750 site on how to do it. I suggest you join the site as a member. Great bunch of guys there. I was actually on this site first to diagnose a lot of my 750 problems before I even found out about the 750 site.

If you SEARCH the forum, there will all kinds of posts regarding it. I have a 2D, an E, and F all standards and love them all!!! Great bikes!

Another thing, do not be tempted to remove the airbox and put pods on the carbs. I did and spent $800 total to get those carbs tuned right ($400 one year for sync and re-jet, second year on Morgan Carb-tune and color tune). Those Mikuni MKI's work best with factory airbox setup.

It came with pods on it. I had to adjust the points by I got it going yesterday. Had to adjust the idle down to about ~1000 rpm. Seems to run pretty good but smells super rich! It does have aftermarket exhaust also. So we'll see how deep I am into this bike. Still, the bike I traded wasn't running so I got a leg up with this one.

Well, one way to know for sure is by checking the plugs. When you run aftermarket pipes and pods, the crowd consensus is that you have to automatically up the main jet size along with the pilots. That's not always true. I run K&N pods on my E, and raised the needle clip one position, and she runs like a raped ape, with plugs perfectly tan.
