  • Kawasaki KE175 splined shifter shaft

The shifter on this bike has a lot of slop in it because the shifter doesn't fit tightly on the splines. The pinch bolt is tightened up all the way. Any suggestions on tightening this up?

I was considering taking it off and grinding the slot wider so it can pinch down a little tighter. The other idea was to put some epoxy in to fill the gap, but hopefully not make it impossible to remove in the future!

I had a similar problem long ago on an old dirt bike, I ended up removing some of the metal from the center of the flat area where the split is. After doing that, it was able to tighten down a bit more, YMMV.

Thanks, I will take a measurement of the shaft and the inside of the shifter when it's off. I'm going to try removing some material from the flats, and I'll let you know how it goes.

I finally got a chance to take a look at this last night while I was installing a 15 (up from 14) tooth sprocket. I removed the shifter, cleaned up the splined hole and shaft, and scraped the dirt out of the slit in the shifter. Once I put it back together, I was able to tighten it up and it held securely. I think my first tightening attempts were unsuccessful because there was so much dirt packed in the slot that pinches down. I'm hoping to take it for a ride this coming weekend, if it's not rainy or too cold. Thanks for the help.
