CX500? Anything I should watch out for?

    Fresh pics, I added my own machined brass bushings, and E-clip seat struts, used a pair of old valve springs from one of my Chevy L-6 engines, and they are about as perfect of spring rate as I could ask for. Also mounted the ammo can-saddlebag, to carry some backup wrenches, screwdrivers, wire pliers, and still have enough room for a 1-liter soda and my usual lunch Tupperware.


    BARE BONES CHOPPERS: If it don't make it go faster, you don't need it!

      Looks much better. Could I get a close-up or two of yer seat springs? I have a couple Chev valve springs I've been saving for the same purpose.

        These are the bushings and struts I made, the brass bushings press into the frame.

        And here are the struts and springs mounted up. I just wish the brass bushings were visible, as brass is going to be a theme for details on the bike.

            I had thought of that, might add that later. An added bonus is that it will allow the machined brass piece to be seen...

              Hi Davey,
              get a length of brass bar about 1/4" bigger in diameter than the frame tube.
              Put it crosswise in a 4-jaw and bore through it to fit the frame tube.
              Swap to a 3-jaw, centre the work, bore through to fit the slider bolts, turn each end to make a seat for the spring then cut the bar in halves to make the lower spring holders.
              Make the top spring holders to look the same without the scoops.

                Probably a bit late now, but the early models had a LOT of trouble with the camchain tensioners. Be very careful to follow the manual carefully when adjusting it, as it's an engine-out job to replace the tensioner.
                Other than that, what the other guys said about the fan blades.
                Great little high revving (for a pushrod motor) and easy to service bike. Put a pair of conti mufflers on it and it'll sound like the ultimate ducati!

                  Not sure on cam chain tension, this one is an 81, maybe I'll check the CX forum closer before I worry about it.
                  Someone on one of my other forums requested a left side picture, so here r a few.

                    Made the baffles for my pipes today, check it.

                    These are the individual press fit machined pieces.
                    And this is the baffle assembly.


                    And this is installed in the stainless tubing.

                    Took a lot more pics but the flash just made the rest a big glare.

                        Nope. The engine drops straight down. Pretty easy to change one out really. I had to on mine.

                              I rode mine all over Texas for a year or 2. Actually a pretty good road bike but not real fast.

                              Was good riding around DFW in the traffic jams because it's water cooled.

                              I did experience the cooling fan knock as was mentioned earlier, thought I blew the engine. Simple fix though.

                              The carbs are a bitch to work on though. Nearly impossible to get to with the engine in the bike.

                              I found it to be a good dependable bike although a bit under powered. It was the forerunner to the Goldwing.

                                How that? The GoldWing was introduced as a 1975 model. Wasn't the CX/GL500 several years later? Is this a case of your fingers outrunning your brain, or did I miss something?
