  • KZ 750 LTD help?

Working on a 81 750 LTD for a friend, has compression readings of 100,95,100,105 psi on a cold engine. Has spark on all 4 holes, but after getting her started, and roughly idling for 2-3 min, I notice that head pipes 1&2 are cool to touch, whereas 3&4 are scorching hot. I assumed at first that it must be a fuel delivery issue, with a blockage at the fuel inlet tee between carbs 2&3, but loosening the fuel bowl plug screws, clean fresh fuel flows freely and plentifully... So I got the carb rack off the bike, on the bench, fully disassembled, and all jets and needles are clean as a whistle... Any specific ports in the carb bodies I should look into deeper? Thought I'd check here before splitting the rack and having to start at square one. Thank you gents! And remember to keep it rubber side down!

did you check for a strong spark maybe a problem with the plugs or wires

Lots of carb problems are electrical problems...

Didja check the coils and associated wiring? Hell, even the sparkplugs are suspect. Have you tried swapping the plug wires? Have you looked into the intake (and exhaust) ports to see if the valves are opening?

      Good luck...

Spark looks passable at all 4 positions... Checked there before tearing into carbs could definitely use new plugs though, regardless. I guess I will finish up the carbs, put them back on and toss in some new ngks just to be sure. Also gonna do a tune and sync just for good measure while I got her apart.

Sometimes life sends ya a bike, just to remind ya to check the simple shiite first... Turns out, after going thru the carbs, putting them back on, and tweaking the mixture screws a half turn or two, she starts backfiring heavily thru carb #2... All the while running on just cyls 3&4. Turns out the plug wires on 1&2 were switched, and had been since she was dropped off at my house. Switched them back and pow! Running on all 4 once again! Now I just need to richen her up to compensate for the aftermarket slip on mufflers, sync the petrol pumpers, and send her home!

Nope, she is only running on 3 now. 1,3&4 seem strong, but #2 is still cold, and if I wrap it up a few rpms, she starts shooting flame outta the left muffler...? Already checked the float height for all 4 carbs, so that's not it, it's not flooding 2, from what I can tell anyway. I kinda suspected the idle jet plugs' o-rings might need replacing, but would that cause enough enrichment to completely extinguish that cyl?
