V-Star 650 not charging

Buddy has a 2002 V-Star 650 that is not charging. Bike has been up and running, battery went dead on a trip home. He charged the battery and checked the voltage running, it had 12.5 volts revved up. Does anyone have the test procedure and specs for the stator and regulator for this bike?
