  • 83 Virago Question

Having never looked much at Virago's I now find myself with a question. Right now all I know is that a friend of mine has an 83 Virago and it backfires under constant (holding the throttle steady) throttle. If he is accelerating it pulls great with no problems. It idles good. just backfires pretty much at any speed when the throttle is held in one position.
Is there an issue that I am not aware of with these bikes? Kind of like the 11's pick up coils. It sounds to me like maybe a timing advance issue but I am as familiar with these bikes as I am with the moon's surface. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

i had a 1978 kawasaki sr 650. it would do the same thing after a few trips to the shop we found a hole in the exaust where the two tubes came together. the only difference between the kz and the sr was the tank and the exaust. the two center cylinder tubes went together to the right side of the bike and the two outer cylinder tubes went to the left side of the bike. i plugged the hole with some jb weld style putty and it fixed the problem. not sure why it would backfire but it sure did.

      Backfiring

Not sure, could be anything from valve adjustment to electrical connections, but here is a link that may help:

1980 XS1100G "Dolly G" Full Dresser (with a coat of many colors )
      1979 XS1100SF (stock-euro mods planned)
      1984 XV700L Virago (to be hot-modded)
      1983 XJ750MK Midnight Maxim (semi-restored DD)
      1977 XS650D ( patiently awaiting resto)

Sometimes it takes a whole tank of gas before you can think straight.

Had an 85 XV700 with the same problem. After R&R'n the Carbs a few too many times, Turned out to be the TCI. Had it rebuilt by a guy out in Cali. Ran great after that.
