its hard to find a 02-03 R1 in this area with only 10k miles that still has a good title and all its stock plastic in like new condition. Most of the "Squid"s have wrecked them or tricked em out so bad you can't ride them anymore.
The 02-03 in my opinion are the best looking of the newer fuel injected R1's.

I don't know what an R1 brings, but nice used V-Stars can be purchased for very little. I've never heard complaints about them.
Well in this part of the country you can find an ok 02-03 R1 for $3800 to $4500. I'm asking $5000 for mine. Its only got 10,100 miles on it and has been well cared for. looks almost new. I've been offered $4500 cash for it so far. Looks like the V-Stars of age and mileage that this guy has are going for $4000 to $5500 around here. The cruisers are alot more popular in these parts than crotch rockets it seems.
I'm still interested in looking @ tha BMW I posted in my other thread. I've never seen one in real life. I Know I'm trying to get away from crotch rockets, BUT.... to own a #180 of 200 limited edition Boxer Cup Race bike may be hard to pass up. Those BMW's go for upwards to $8000 to a person that is looking for one. Being the wheeler dealer I am all I see is profit in that bike. But then I'm stuck with a bike I don't want to ride so I can make money off it down the road.
I'm trying to find something a little more comfortable as my riding desires have changed from speed to length. I've always like the Star line of bikes. I'm just amazed how little power they make being a Yamaha. Not sure I could live with myself if my XS was my fastest bike I Told the owners of both bike I would like to look upon them Saturday. @ least then I can get an idea of whether or not its the direction I want to go. I'm not in a hurry to bail on my R1... its been a good bike, but I'd also like to get my hands on something before summer sets in so I can give it a good once over and inject a little of myself in it

I have a friend in Seattle who just sold a 650 V-Star and I think he got $3K or more for it. He took it in trade for a sail boat. He asked for my advice before he did the trade and I told him not to do it as he'd be stuck with that bike forever unless he gave it away. I was very surprised when I got the message from him that he sold it.
Where I live, if I wanted a V-Star 1100, I'd buy a nice one for $2500 or less. Sure, they ask more, but I know what they go for. A friend of mine bought three from Craigslist because he couldn't resist them at the price. First, it was 1100 cc, then 1600 cc, then 1700 cc, finally, an FJR. So, he had three bikes to unload! Today, he's on a '03 KZ1000 Police! I think he may have paid as much for it as he did any low mileage V-Star!

cheapest 1100 V-Star on Portland Craigslist right now is an 05 Silverado for $4400 They all seem to hover around the $5000 mark. I've noticed in my buying ventures that the Pacific Northwest statistically has the highest priced power sports stuff. I don't know why. It might be that when then sun finally comes out in June every one wants to be on a bike. Everyone seems to get above or right @ high book value for bikes. So you ever find anything down South there for cheap you can ship it up here and I'll sell it for you @ a shiny profit. I've yet to sell a bike much below High book value.
Once again this is why the BMW Boxer Cup interests me so much. I'm sure I could turn a good profit on it if I sat on it. Problem is I'm looking for something for me. Not to turn. I want something I can ride 2 up on and keep some miles off the XS. I'd like to reserve the XS for sight seeing trips and rally type stuff. the rest of the season I'd like to have something to ride around on that is comfortable. I Really Want a sport tourer like an FJR or Concours but them go for BIG money around here if they are low mile bikes (atleast the FJR's do)

Just an observation about those two bikes; I haven't owned either, but know people who do or have owned these makes/models...
The V-star is a nice bike, but if it's got chromed aluminum (forks/trees, engine cases, etc) look it over very close as these bits are noted for blistering/peeling chrome after they get to be 4-5 years old. It's extremely tough to get quality, long-lasting plating on aluminum and Yamaha apparently hasn't managed it. Several owners complained about this, and also the very high costs of replacements.
The BMW has a small but loyal following, but parts/repair costs will take your breath away... might be a hard resale if you can't find a 'enthusiast'.

I owned 4 BMWs over a 30 yr period and said I would never change to anything else. I finally sold out about 3 yrs ago for lack of riding. I can only say for myself that these are the finest bikes ever built (expensive). Found them very easy to work on and parts are like every brand made. If you know where to go and are mechanically inclined they cost no more to maintain than any bike. I am not familiar with this particular bike but would give my left %$# for one. As far as touring, mine were all sport tourers and I traveled all over the US in total comfort. As far as 2 up, I rode mostly solo so no comment.
For me, it's no contest. Pure motorcycle enjoyment and economically, a no brainer.

My fear is I would be stuck with that bmw and would hate myself. Every time I start to walk away from sport bikes. 1 draws me back. With that said if my wife could sign my name to the title of the R1 that v star would already be in my garage. She's tired of watching me beat myself up on sport bikes. Every time I leave the house she wants to know where I'm going so she knows which way to start looking if she doesn't hear from me in a while.
My doctor informed me last week that if I was looking forward to spinal fusion surgery on my lower back, to just keep doing whatever I'm doing. So it may be time to finally hang up the sport bike leathers and get a cruiser.
I've always wanted to own a metric v twin. Even thou they are turds they sound cool and are easy to work on. I'm really leaning towards the star. It would be nice if someone would just throw money my way for the r1 then i can buy whatever I want. But I gotta play the cards I'm delt

my buddy has one and it wont do 100, so he says. I dont think i would really care if it did or not as long as it accelerated nice. About the newer bikes, I was at the suzuki dealership and saw a 900 custom and it really looked good. Now you go from 900 straight to 1700 with no in between. Anyway, I had my 77xs750 and asked him how much horsepower it made and he went and checked and it was only 50 horsepower, i couldnt believe it. My old triple makes 67 and its a 750, now i have my 1100 and i bet it probably makes more power than the 1700.

I'm really not worried about it doing 100. I don't even ride my xs that fast. And ya the star 1100 is rated like 56 hp. Lol! To me its more about the ride. If I wanted to live by comparing numbers is keep the r1. 152 hp 77 lb ft and 436 lbs wet. Now those are numbers!
