Thought I'd throw my 2 cents in, I owned a XJ650,bought it new,was a sweet ride,no problems what so ever. Handled like a dream, and was really fast. The only thing you have to watch out for is,when cornering, don't gas it to much cause the rearend lift because of driveshaft. I'm short and it was very sure footed. Good luck with buying it and ride safe.

Weird key start looked like a vending machine key
lots of missing or broken parts
All chrome was painted gold
drag bars
choped the front fender and painted gold
throttle stuck
20k
engine looked good outside
exhaust not stock
get this... he wrapped the entire exhaust in asbestos blanket said super hot his fix

Strange thing hate to see it sit like this would like to breath new life into it but a ton of work
This guy spent 1,200 for this bike 9 months ago it looked just like this when he got it

Hi Eastcoaster,
to confirm your suspicion. You are nuts.... but no more so than the rest of us here.
As one who has promoted the Model XJ650/750 that one sounds too far gone to be suitable for your daughter. Open your search a little wider I am sure there are many available in much better shape though the owners will be looking for a bit more money.

Still thinking about it
I am still considering the 1982 650 not for my daughter but a project bike we are at $300
There is a guy local who has the following bikes he is parting out do you know if any are compatible to the 550
If I could get a decent tank, side covers and exhaust system I might go for it
1) 1981 Yamaha Seca 750 (yellow) with 24,456 miles
2) 1986 Kawasaki Vulcan 750 (black) with 13,046 miles
3) 1981 Yamaha ? seca or maxim cc? (black) with 24,237 miles
4) 1980 Yamaha Special 400 (red) with 14,816 miles
5) 1982 Yamaha Maxim 400 (black) with 5381 miles
6) 1982 Yamaha Maxim 750 (red) with 44,086 miles
7) 1981 Yamaha Maxim 650 (black) with 20,345 miles82 XJ1100J

550 or 650?
If you're questioning the parts for the XJ 650, numbers 6 & 7's tank, exhaust and possibly the side covers will work on it.
Some parts from 1,3 & 5, mostly the drive line, will work also.
2 & 4 not so much.1980 XS1100G "Dolly G" Full Dresser (with a coat of many colors )

Hi Eastcoaster,
#6 Maxim 750 in Red...the fast colour
The Seca is much the same bike with a more" sport" look which your daughter may like.
Ofcourse it would depend on individual condition as to what each is worth$$

These bikes, before '85 have the, of course, "Earlier Starting System" which is sometimes referred to as a "box 'o rocks" and when you go to start it you'll see why. Don't be discouraged by this as there is a later starter mod that I'm doing on my '84 XV 700, if any consolation it's a bargaining chip. as the later starter mod will run ya a buck and some change just for the parts.
From Virago Tech .com
" On the 81-83 750 and 920 and the 84-85 700 bikes the #2 idler gear is thrown out into the flywheel gear by inertia. If the battery and starting system aren't up to par the gear doesn't get thrown out with enough force to engage the flywheel gear completely. This causes enough wear, over time, on the gear teeth that they will slip apart from each other, causing the "box of rocks" noise.
The 85-up 1000 and 86-up 700, 750 and 1100 bikes use a solenoid to pull the #2 idler gear into the flywheel gear. This makes for a solid lock up between the gears, eliminating the slippage and wear on the teeth."
Here's a link to the earlier starter fix if you need to go that route and if the PO hasn't already done it:

And heres the later fix:

The Virago is a good line of bikes other than the starter issue, sort of like the Elevens second gear quirk.1980 XS1100G "Dolly G" Full Dresser (with a coat of many colors )

The bike is being advertised as a 1980 model. It may be meaningless, but I don't remember any such bike existing before the 1981 model year. At that time, it was a completely new design. In hindsight, it's probably fair to say it was successful.Marty (in Mississippi)

Thanks
Old Skool thanks, he mentioned the starter and thanks for the repair tips. I feel better about that. I am guessing it is an 81 they did not make in 80 if it was his fathers might not be to beat up.
I was thinking of going to look at the 1100 it has been on for a while sounds like this kid has had some issues. I am sure it can be fixed maybe just the fuse box. It is to big for my daughter I might pick up just to put it back together I finished my xj1100 and need something I enjoy to take up my spare time
I plan to look at the others you sent if this one falls through. Great job on the "finds" I look all day and do not have such luck
Thanks again82 XJ1100J

Well, Jersey doesn't have a lot to offer as far as bikes for sale, so I expanded a little into the Philly area, but I'd also expand a little more and not just concentrate on Yamaha's, no offense to the extremely brand loyal.81 XS1100H
