Firstlet me fix your link to this one--->http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/mcy/2850590417.html

It's up to you really, I've never been a big fan of the baby xj's, but an older chain drive XS650 or 550 would be nice. Again, up to you, probably get him even cheaper, those don't fetch all that much money.

Not real sure without seeing some better pics, the drag bars aren't stock. I would start at no more than $400.00 based on the admitted needs of the bike from the seller.
The exhaust has a collecter under the engine, where 4 transitions into 2, that rusts out and is NLA but can be rebuilt fairly easily with a mig welder.

These bikes are fun to ride. The engine is similar to the Elevens only skinnier as the alternator is positioned up behind the cylinders. They have a lower center of gravity which makes them somewhat flickable in the twistys. Also sporting a 9500rpm redline makes them friendly to the heavy wristed users. They use Hitachi carbs which are constant velocity just like the Elevens and need to be clean times 3 to enjoy the benefits. The suspension and braking system is just like most of the bikes from this era, just adequate in tip top shape.

More info on these can be found at XJBikes.com.
Also parts, as in every nut, bolt, washer, and the excellent advice on what part will fit a particular need can be found at XJ4ever, run by Chacal, on the same site.

      1983 XJ750MK Midnight Maxim (semi-restored DD)

Sometimes it takes a whole tank of gas before you can think straight.

        Thanks

Thanks for the fix Old Skool I am just getting over my slide rule. Hope to learn to post pix soon. I am looking for a bike for my daughter to ride she has a huge interest and rides a rebel now and has out grown it. She is small and this would make a nice mini match to my xj1100 The kid really likes the 1100 but can't ride it. I am going to take a look tomorrow and go with your suggestion of $400 I would rather stay 100% original and spend a little more the gasket work is concerning and the PO says the fender was customized and the starter is suspect Thanks for the help

You are a far more trusting man with cages than I will ever be, I can't fathom any of my girls riding a MC, I know woman do it all the time, but if something ever happened to them because of an idiot in a car, I'd commit murder!
Especially with NJ or NYC drivers, I used to drive semi and been to the east coast one time too many, once you cross the Delaware Water Gap, it's like all laws and courtesy is gone. Wish them all the safety in the world!!!

            Hi Eastcoaster,
Great little bike. Mine hauled my fat ass all the way to Key West and back Can be ridden gently but will respond well when pushed.
As already said those handle bars are not original. Pictures not good enough to tell other issues. this model is a good choice for some one with a shorter inseam.Handles nicely and has no trouble keeping up with an XS1100

There's another one in the area a year older and asking a little less, and looks less molested, some rust from sitting a only a 550cc, just another option.

In my opinion the 650 is a much better model than the 550. 550 motor does not have a great reputation.
650 is down sized 750 motor otherwise they are the same bike. 750 also gets a second disc on the front.

Like you Phil, to me, bigger is better, but remember, it's for his daughter, and not knowing her stature, smaller might be better, just thought I'd throw it out, if nothing else, it gives him something to compare the other one to. If I had a choice, I'd keep looking for a 750, really no bigger than the 650 but more motor, but I'm sure the price has to be right too.

The 550's are chain drive so you lose the cleanliness of the shafty and gain a mantainence chore.

The 550 Maxim had a chain drive. The 650 Maxim is shaft drive.

                            Good Luck

Hope it works out and you get a good deal.
I actually call my Mid Max a girls bike 'cause it's sits low and is really easy to manuever IMHO It would be a perfect fit for your daughter.

The drivers footrests are adjustable, about 2", from front to rear.

One good thing about adjusting valves on it is the tool used on the Eleven works on the 750, also if I do them at the same time I can swap shims between both bikes as they are the same 29mm diameter.

                              xj750

I rode a 750 maxim & passed it on to my son. It went beyond 6 figures in mieage, with no actual repairs ever. great bike!

(650 basically same bike.) Why not look for a 750, if she's ready to move up from 250. Might last a little longer b4 next move up.
