Well my son had a 81 XS 400 given to him. We went thru the carbs and all the required cleaning and adjusting. Bike runs pretty well. It still seems a little reluctant to fall to idle if under 4000 rpm. I did a sync with a single gage and a couple of shut offs so that may be the issue. My sticks had all of the mercury sucked out when I loaned out. Man I wish you could buy mercury at a reasonable price. Found it online last night for $79 for 250 grams. Hell I can buy a Morgan for just a little more. Anyway the question I have is can I change the seal behind the rotor or is that a case split? Found about a tablespoon of oil in that case while l was looking stuff over.

Just to touch on your early point of syncing the carbs, I use a homemade manometer and use tranny fluid, less likely to cause major problems if accidently sucked in, and a whole lot cheaper to replace.

Call or e-mail Motion Pro abd they will sell you a non mercury replacement fluid for you stick. $35 last time I heard. Personally, I collect old furnace thermostats and break the vials to get the mercury. CZ

And from what I've heard, it doesn't work all that well.....hangs up in the glass tubes. Bought one re-fill container of mercury from MP bout 5yrs.ago as mine splilled(with my help). Unobtanium now so trying to be a bit more careful............least I know where some may live, Thanks CZ.

On XS400's hanging idle is almost always lean idle mixture. All the carbon balancing in the world won't help if you don't richen the idle mixture up. When it's right it should drop down to correct idle almost instantly.

I did have to re tune and tighten up the intake system but the idle is now dropping like a rock. As for the sync I used a 4 inch inches of mercury gage I found in my piles of stuff that made the single gage method better. Also bought some bulk air cleaner foam from Dennis Kirk to replace the home made furnace filter material that was being used as the air cleaner elements. Its running well now. I agree its a fun little bike and great to learn on. I'm still waiting for a title before it can go into full time service. Once I get that I'll start with the cosmetics.
