  • Sluggish Tachometer and other Gauges

So the instruments on this XS750SE that I picked up a few weeks ago are weak at best. I wrote it off to old/bad cables and bought some new ones from parts n more (tach, clutch, throttle).

However, when I swapped out the tach cable, I'm still getting really sluggish readings. It seems to register the idle speed if I leave it alone for a little bit. But the tach doesn't really do anything when I roll the throttle back.

I'm not sure where I should be looking next. The gauge or where the cable attaches to the engine.

Any help troubleshooting and directing me to what I should be checking is greatly appreciated.

Sidenote: The speedometer also seems to have a similar sluggishness to it.

    Thanks,
    Ian

That's not unusual when they've sat a long time. They will often clear up over time, but otherwise what you can do is sprits a bit of wd40 up into the innards (carefully) to free things up. On my XS400 that made things work almost too well (it got almost twitchy there for a while before it settled down).

How crucial is using something like cable lube?

Would that have an impact on it?

In my experience, cable lube will keep the cables from breaking, but doesn't have any impact on the gauges being sluggish.
