Hi All, I am contemplating buying a 500 interceptor for my son to ride.Does anyone have any input to offer about the reliability of these bikes. I am a big fan of the inline four's but have heard some mixed reviews about the v-fours. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks:Rick

I've heard some poor things about the early Honda v4's having to do with the top ends on them not oiling properly. I have a friend who had one seize on him doing 80MPH down the freeway lane sharing and locked up the rear tire and dumped oil under it at the same time. He had a real time getting the seat extracted from his arse let me tell you. I think it ripped the seat cover getting off the bike. And then he had to drag it to a place he could leave it till he could come back with a pickup to get the bike to take it home. And it's still not fixed, and probably won't get so, he's probably going to just buy another bike rather than fix that one.
Tried to talk him into an 11, but he's kind of a Honda fan.Cy

I think by 85 they had the oiling problem fixed. But there are fixes that have been created by people to solve the problem on the models that were not fixed if the damage has not been done yet. Some aint cheap though.Nathan

my sons both went against my advice and bought 750 Interceptors.
If the 500 engine is the same several layers of afterthoughts piled atop one another as the 750 don't touch it with a sh1tty stick.
They are great bikes to ride but a right swine to work on.Fred Hill, S'toon

Thanks all for your post I am beginning to get the picture. I heard similar stories but wanted more confirmation, I guess. Thanks:Rick1980 XS 1100 replaced the seat and sissy bar from a XS 1100 standard and changed the handle bars. Did not like the original bars at all.No mod at all except for a four into one header.
