My 12 y/o son has got a hankering for a dirt bike as a Xmas present. After riding with dad for a couple of years the bug has set in. He's 5'6" and about 140lbs. so the 50cc and 70cc are out, so are the parts store chinese numbers - Baja and the likes. Hard to get parts for them!!
So, I ran accross a 2004 Yamaha YZ80 bored out to 110cc for $400. VIN number says its a 2003, but I guess it sold as a 2004, same as some of our XS's. What's strange is that Yam stopped making 80cc bikes in the late '90s.
So I surmise that it started out as an 85cc.
My local MC salvage yard owner advised me that in order to achieve a true overbore on this type bike the cylinder had to be re-sleeved!!
I'm definetly doing a compression test before making an offer and will try to get it running as well (fresh premix fuel and starting spray - ether). Owner states that it's out of gas and hasn't been run for 6 months.
Will be checking it out on Friday.
Any thoughts or advice??
