    xs400

Hi Scoot, I have the same bike, along with a bunch of other xs sizes. I checked my repair manual by Haynes and it looks like the ball bearings are for the choke and the spring also. I can copy the diagram and send it to you or scan it and send to you, let me know your email for the scan copy, hope that helps. If worse case scenario and you cant figure it out where the parts go, it should still run ok, I think the ball and spring are just to help adjust the choke lever only. Anyway, check your manual if you have one, otherwise send me your email for a scan copy.......Mike in S. Diego

      enrichment system parts

      Hi,

Looks like someone beat me with the info, so I will elaborate a little more.

I cant speak specifically to the xs 400, but I believe that the carbs are very similar to the elevens.

If that is so, those parts are no doubt part of the enrichment system, commonly thought of as the choke. Youve apparently removed them and at least still have both of them, unlike most of us it seems.

The springs go in the hole in the carb under where the balls go, the spring and ball serves as detents to the choke, to hold it in the on position. On my carb bodies, that hole is in the rear of the choke rod, that is, between where the rod goes in, and the outcropping on the intake area of the carb on side that is nearest the engine itself. It is located on the diaphragm tower if that helps. The balls go in a divot in the choke rod itself. I am sure others will chime in to correct me if Ive misstated anything. In the future, it would be helpful to have pictures of the parts youre talking about, since there are other springs on the carbs. For what its worth, the springs that I am talking about are about the same size or a bit smaller than the size of the springs found in ball point pens. They are the only springs I know of in the carbs in that size range.

          carb setup

Its been awhile since tearing apart the xs400 carbs, but from memory, I think the float height is around 21 mm, turn out the idle mixture screws about two full turns each, and get a carb synch tool which makes the biggest improvement to balance the carbs. I got mine at jcwhitney.com as it can do 1 to 4 carbs at the same time. If you are cheap, you can use one vacuum gauge and go back and forth on the carbs. Make sure to change oil, new plugs, clean air filters, adjust valves before doing the carb adjust, always put in a GAS FILTER, inline,to stop crud going into the carbs or you will have to tear apart over and over, they run about 3 bucks at any motorcycle shop,,,,,if you are keeping the bike it would be good to get a repair manual for it,,,try ebay,,,,MIke in Sun DIego
