  • difference between 78 and 79 carbs

i have a 79 xs1100 and i need to rebuild the carbs. I found a kit for a 78, are they're major differences or are they the same?

There are really only 2 styles of these carbs (with some tiny variations). Generally, the '78s and '79s use the same carbs, and the '80 & '81+ use the same. You can tell pretty quick by looking at the idle mixture screws in the kits. The tips are different between the 2 styles.

There may hav ebeen some jetting differences and or the needles or emulsion tubes could be different. I've never worked on the 78 model carbs.

There is a guy on ebay that sells the kits to rebuild the carbs. he goes by Georgefix. He knows exactly what was stock in each year and has the right parts. Very fair guy to deal with IMO.

I don't have my clymers up here its in the garage... but basically 78 an 79 carb bodies are the same. The 78 was a little richer in the main jet. I think the slide needles are the same taper. However the slides are smaller in diam. Than the 80 and up. Maybe someone else with a. Clymers will chime in.
