I thought I would check with you fellas first since I've always gotten such good advice. I should have stuck with xs11s and inline 4s but decided I wanted a V-4 and bought a 89 Yamaha Venture Royale. I was checking the valve clearances and had 10 out of 16 that needed attention. I only had 29mm shims for my xs11s and no 25 mm shims for the new bike. I have the special tool that lets you do two valves at one time since it is double overhead cam. I took one shim out from the exhaust side and was going to use it on the intake side. I thought that the cam wouldn't hit the bucket with the shim out. Brain Fart. I rotated the cam on the intake and heard a metallic noise, not good. I broke a chip out of the bucket. Now the bucket doesn't turn. I was able to go back and put the shim back. The valve goes up and down but the bucket is stuck. I'm afraid that the shim might come out and that would really be a mess. My question to he who knows is, what is the procedure for replacing the bucket? If I take the cam off, being very careful to make sure I can put it back, will the bucket come out the top or do I have to take the other part of the casing apart? Thank you for your help. Sam

Problem is, if the bucket is still down so is the valve. If you rotate the engine/cams it may cause it to hit a valve and bend that and/or another valve with it. You have removed the bucket holding tool I'm sure...
To get that shim bucket out you will have to pull the cam that operates it.
You'll probably need a manual for sure to R&R the cam and bucket if you dont already have one.Richard

broken bucket, lifter
Thank you Richard for the help. I've done some research since I made the post and the bucket is the lifter. From what I can tell, I just need to take the cam off and the lifter should lift out. Hopefully that was the only damage except I don't know why this one won't spin like it should. I did get it to move a little but it won't move on it's own. When I rotate the cam the lifter does go up and down. I have to be careful taking the cam out so I'm able to put it back. There are markings on the end of the cam. I thought I would put some white out or something to make sure the cam chain, sprocket teeth and end of cam all line up where they did when I take it off. It's the number two cylinder and I know to have it at top dead center before I remove it and not turn the crank until I get it back. If you can think of anything else I sure appreciate the help.
