  • Vin # check.

I live in Washington and own a 1980 XS1100LG. I have a salvage title and the vin # is only 9 digits long. Every vin search engine I've tried has asked for 17 digits. I'm confused. I've tried to add whatever numbers on the title that would add up to 17, still no luck. What is going on with my title? I bought the bike as abandoned out of a junk yard, had it inspected with state patrol and this is the title they gave to me. How many digits do your titles show? Is there a place where I can find what it should be if it's wrong?

Before 1980, VIN numbers didn't really exist. My '81 has the short Serial number, but the VIN is a longer number. Your VIN is actually the 9-digit Serial number.

I was gonna try to generate a 17 digit vin # off of that page to see if it helps, but it's all about XJs. I've contacted a Yamaha dealership to see if it will help. I don't have a 17 digit stamp or sticker on my frame. I'm gonna keep searching for vin generator that can maybe convert my 9 to a 17. Even then I doubt if it will help to find out any vehicle history.

I'm not worried about it as far as parts, I know what I've got. I just want to find other stuff, like maybe the true odometer reading, how many previous owners and all that stuff. I know the original owners name cause it's stamped on a plaque on the front of the triple tree, kin of cool, wish it was my name though. I'll leave it for the heck of it. You never know, I might meet the guy one day. That would be neat.
