Anybody have any thoughts on the XJ550? I am thinking of getting one to tinker with. It is in overall good shape, but has been sitting for 10 years covered up. It would need all the normal stuff to get it road worthy, just don't know if the XJ550 is worth the trouble. Anything special about them?

Maybe not worth the effort to get it roadworthy though Larry? I figured it will cost about $400.00 to get there.1980 XS1100LG Midnight

Had one
Had one also that I fixed up. The TCI goes out real easy on these. Be Careful when working on the battery connections as they are close to the TCI. If it does short out even briefly there is a connection on the bottom of the TCI that can short. Its easy to fix, I just dripped hot solder across it and it fixed it. Overall a fun bike but you need to rev it a lot to get anywhere, it doesnt like to just cruise at low rpm's. A little small for an average sized guy, great if you are under 5-8. The chain drive is noisy, the carbs are easy to rebuild, its light and with good tires can really scream around corners. For one up its good but way too small for two up for any distance. Anyway, I sold it to my sons buddy and he has beat the h out of it and it just comes back for more.....good luck, Mikemike

I decided to get this bike. He said i could have it for $50.00. I think that is worth the gamble. I'll change the oil, clean out the tank, and carbs, and see if it runs ok first. If it does, i'll clean it up, change fluids, clean master cyl., grease everything, shine it up with new tires, and put it up for sale. A good project to keep me busy next winter.1980 XS1100LG Midnight

Can't pass one up for that price. I paid $75.00 for mine and that was 8 years ago. It didn't even run and I had to track down the title for it
Have fun with it Bob.
P.S. Your going to need a YICS Eliminator for it...
