  • Purchasing motorcycle trailer in California

    Hello,

I'm not sure if this is being posted in the correct place, moderator please move wherever necessary. I'm interested in purchasing a trailer, but the person selling it doesn't have any of the paperwork, license plate, and VIN#. There isn't a VIN# on it he said. He said all I'd have to do is take it to the DMV and get plates for it. I'm kind of skeptical, anyone know how that process works? If it's anything like trying to register a car or motorcycle, then it won't happen, cause they want all that info but trailers i'm not sure. It's one of those 3 cycle trailers.

I am sure it is different per state. Perhaps someone from Cali has the answers.

Oh yeah, I meant to clarify and mention this post was directed toward California residents.

I registered a horse trailer in California that had been sitting in a field for many many years. After 7 years out of reg, the trailer falls off the books. I had to file paperwork with the CHP and get a CHP inspection (if I recall correctly, it's been several years) and have a DMV inspection done as well. My horse trailer did not have a vin number, or any other identifying markings. They listed it as a utility trailer and issued me permanent plates for it. There was a fair amount of DMV paperwork to be filed too. Hope that helps.

Ohh yea, I didn't have a bill of sale or a pink slip either

          Hi 1,
move to Saskatchewan? I needed to plate my old homebuilt bike/utility trailer.
          What's the serial #?
I built it myself so it ain't got one.
You must have a serial #. Here's a sticker with a serial # on it. Here is your plate & registration. $42 please.
