Some Pics Finally Up

I finally posted some updated info and pics on my website:

I took the liberty of posting a pic of res1uqtp's XS400 as an example of what the bike looks like in pristine condition. I also have some pics of bikes I've owned.

At the bottom are 4 pics of my plugs. They show that I'm running lean, but I'm wondering if they are still in the acceptable range. Any comments on them is greatly appreciated.

Hi Tony,
that Kawi is the same model my boys learned to ride dirt on.
It too had been painted black and trashed but by the little bastards that had stolen it.
The cops found it again and I got it off the legit owner for a bargain.
If the aesthetics of the XS400's blackout motif is what you want, OK,
but those rototiller bars are an ergonomic disaster and they gotta go.
The plugs look bright white on my screen.
If they truly are that colour, you do need bigger jets.

Some nice looking bikes you have! although, a less fuzzy pic of the Midnight would be appreciated... I like to drool in full resolution (it's my favorite of the XS family)

I'll admit my bike doesn't hold a candle to res1uqtp's. But it looks worse in the garage pics than in real life. But I also look better outside in natural light; something about flash photography . . . .

I'll admit the pull-back bars look kinda cool, but they are not very comfortable on the wrists. Wonder what ape-hangers would look like . . .

Rejetting will be my winter project (well, one of them anyway). I could use a little guidance as far as doing this is concerned. I don't know what size jets are in there now and I don't know where to start as far as upsizing is concerned. I also assume we're just talking main jets here. I rebuilt a one barrel carb for an old truck a few years ago, but never messed with jets on a bike.

Yeah... generally talking the main jets... but you could possibly get away with backing the pilot jets (pilot jets? and nobody said anything? that should have been idle mixture screws) out a bit more... But it wouldn't hurt to check your main jets to see what you have in there...

AND... I think you'll find either 110s across or 110s on the outside and 120s on the inner two... I'm running 79 carbs on my bike which call for larger mains... so I had to ask my resident guru...

Update

Well I wrestled with leaving the pipes alone, but I went ahead and knocked down another baffle this afternoon. I assume there are at least three in there. So two down and one left I guess. Made it a little louder and I like the sound better than before. I think I will quit here before I go too far and regret it.

I took it for a quick ride around the block (it was in the 30s!). Still runs great and pulls nice for a little bike.

I'll prolly wait until the first of the year before I pull the carbs. I will check and see if there any tutorials on the XS site for rejetting. If not, Google?

Just curious... how different are the 400 carbs from the 1100?

I have had success by increasing the idle mixture using a colourtune device to show idle at just starting to go to yellow in the combustion chamber from the blue , then adjusting using clean plugs and riding at whatever rpm you want to cruise at and hitting the kill switch and pulling in the clutch at the same time .. important ...the same time then have a look at the plugs
yeah this is also contrary to the majority of opinions but it worked for me

Hamjam - Forgive my naivete' but I have zero experience with motorcycle carbs. Are you saying that there's an mixture screw on them like on a car's carb and that the bike's mixture can possibly be made richer that way instead of rejetting?

Just curious... how different are the 400 carbs from the 1100?

From 1980 on they are almost identicle. Before I'm not sure. I know on the 80 and newer because I have a 1980 XS400 sitting next to my 1100 and I've been into both carb sets and depending on whether they are earlier or later they are the same, even the same issues with changes mid year. I'm pretty sure the jetting is different, but otherwise they are the same. As a matter of fact, I believe all the XS series used the same carbs in 1980+, obviously simpler for yamaha not having to deal with lots of different carbs.

At least for the first 1/3 of the throttle settings, as the mixture screw only affects the range covered by by the idle circuit, which covers about the first 1/3 of throttle. After that it becomes the big needle on the vacuum slide and the main jets (main jets come fully in at full throttle).

It may have a little cap over it on your bike Tony ,dig it off with a centre punch or something and give the screw a 1/4 or turn Counter clockwise and go for a boot . see if it makes a difference then check the plugs repeat as needed , just remember your starting point so you can go back to it if this does not work
and yes the main jets and needle take over at 1/3 1/2 throttle but there is still fuel moving through the idle circuit it just might maybe if you're lucky and the stars are right make a difference

Hamjam, I see you are across the little pond from me in Toronto (I'm in Rochester, NY). Snow and freezing rain today. No "going for a boot" anytime soon, I fear.

I don't mind riding in the cold, but I like 4 wheels under me when ice may be present.
