Hey man, more ? about the Virago I've inherited. That's just what happend too.

A very good friend of mine I've known for 30+ years had me bring it here from his place in Texas so that I could get it running for him. Then he got sick and passed away.

Anyway, It's just the Starter clutch I need to find. The one way clutch in it won't hold at all anymore. Everything else seems to be in great shape in there.

I pulled ihe left engine cover and cleaned it and it worked good enough that I did get the engine running finally. Engine sounds great. 18,000k is all it has on it.

I've checked on a new drive from Yamaha but they want $200 - $300 for it.

I'm hoping to find a good one for a LOT less somewhere else.

I can't continue to work on the engine without it.

Any clue where I could find one?

Are you referring to the end of the starter?Or inside the case?
If the part in the starter spins, it won't turn the engine over right.
The clutch part in the end of the starter can be fixed by either welding or jb weld.The problem with that is the starters didn't have enough torque anyway.They used two brushes instead of four.It can work though,if the starter itself is still in good shape.Not many of them are any more.
Now if you are talking about inside the left side cover,I thought mine looked ok,but my flywheel was chewed and it was hard to see with it still on the motor.#2 gear wasn't great either.I used a small mirror to get a good look.The thing about the flywheel and #2 idler gear is that they weren't designed with an angle ground on them so they would mesh easily.So the two gears have a hard time meshing about half the time.So when you have them reground they put a nice lead on both gears.
Have you found viragotech.com?A good source for information on these.
Also you can upgrade your starter to the newer style that is designed a little different.But then you need a left side cover off a xv1000 or xv700,which IIRC needs to be newer than '86.Also need other parts.

I'm talking about the piece inside the left engine cover. The clutch in it is shot.

Yea, I've been to the Virago tech forum. My hadle there is gtvirago. They were actually very friendly and helpful until I mentioned " starter clutch " then it got really quiet.

If you haven't used ebay yet,I usually wait till close to the end of the auction and then just bid what I'm willing to pay.You may have to watch a couple auctions to see what they go for.

Yea Tarzan, those gears look sorta like the ones that mesh with the gears of what I'm looking for.

So a XV1100 uses the same clutch rpg? Do they share any other common parts that would be good for me to know about?

I don't know what all parts do interchange on the later models.
Mine is an early model.I did quite a bit of research when I was redoing the starting system on it and talked to several people about it.That is how I know that on the older models you can upgrade to a newer version.There is a couple threads about it on viragotech about it.
You should be able to go to the bikebandit site and compare part #'s for different years or the yamaha site and check for interchangable parts.

Well, I'm not really sure what all I'm going to need yet.

The starter clutch, and getting the gas tank cleaned up enough to use to start. Then rebuild the carbs.

I took the carbs apart and cleaned them enough so they wouldn't flood over when I put fuel to them. But this thing sat in a carport for 10 years with no other cover, or a gascap on it.

Bobby thought the engine was locked up when he got it and had transmission fluid in the cylinders. Maybe it was, but when I got it the engine turned, and like I said I've had it running and it sounds OK. I thought the neighbors might call the fire dept. though.

The left side of the engine was obviousy exposed to the weather because the chrome is peeling. I'll certainly need all the chromed covers on the lower left side.

In other words lotsa STUFF.

I just need to get it running and ridable like I did the XS. I brought them both home at the same time 'cause I got the XS from Bobby's brother who lives Gainsville also.

Keep me in mind if you run across anything I might be able to use. I've got an ex-brother-in-law in Port Angeles and if nothing else I might get him off his butt, if I can get him to take a day off from salmon fishing, to come pick someting up for me.

From the part numbers on the Yamaha Parts Fiche that year starter clutch is the same on the 91 XV1100. There just happen to be that one on Ebay.

Do they share any other common parts that would be good for me to know about?

You'd have to look at the part numbers for the things you need and compare them. I don't know of any quick cross reference site like Benefiscal for the XV's.
