No experience with the 550, but I had the 750 model of that year.

Only real issue, that I know of, was the LCD dash could be a bit troublesome.

Other than that I think they were much like the XSs and Maxims.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

Sold an 81 XJ550 Seca a few months ago with 54kmi on it. Ran Great, mine was not much for looks.
Still have an 82 XJ550 Maxim with 8kmi on it which I'm getting ready to sell.

Make sure and check compression. Sprockets and chain are subject as well as rear drum brake. It's basically ½ of the same engine as the XS11 less the vacuum advance. Some have reported primary chain guides that disintegrate and cause problems.

The 550 Seca was known to have had hotter cams that the Maxim. My Seca was way quicker than the Maxim. They are 6 speed chain drive. Fun around town bike which run well at 70mph on the freeway and still get 48mpg! The Seca has analog gauges including a fuel gauge!

The Maxim and SECA were virtually identical hp wise. The seca was chain drive and the maxims were shaft.

The 550 and 650 (71hp) models had the same horsepower as thier equal size counterpart, but the XJ750X Maxim was 10hp more than the XJ750 SECA.

I had an 81 XJ650 Midnight Maxim, and it made the XS1100 SEEM tame by comparison, but its because the smaller, lighter bike felt quicker, not sure it really was.

After riding both XJ550's you'd think different.

Maybe, but the specs say otherwise.

I find riding skill has lot to do with it, and I had my '81 Midnight Maxim in 83 so it was pretty new.

Also the chain drive makes a difference. My Maxim was a shaft drive. There were 3 of us, I had the Midnight Maxim (650), one had the regular 650 Maxim, and the other had a 750 Seca. The Seca was quicker, but not faster. and not by a lot.

I never really rode the SECA, I got it as a part trade for my car from my roommate.
