  • 1980 CB650 help

Got this bike, it ran ok with the choke on, but would always die with choke off, then I started chopping stuff, like mufflers, and air filter box. Put on pod filters. Changed gas tank to a more chop-friendly model. Now its not running. Wondering about the accel pump possibly? Anybody else have any experience with these other old bikes?

I have an 82 CB650CS but I haven't had it running yet. I picked it up thinking I might chop it, would like to see some photos of yours.

It sounds like you need to clean the carbs. It's not running on the low speed circuits so you have to fill in the gap with the choke.

Had a 82 CB900F. Carbs are almost the same.
Accelerater pump only comes in when you give it throttle. You wont know until you pull it if it needs replacement. The discharge tubes for it were fun to get cleaned out!
You definetely have dirty idle circuits. Slow speed and mains jets are removable at least on this one.

It can't be the pilots being plugged, since I have cleaned them out (stripped twist tie wire pushed through to clear any obstructions) at least 3 times now. Good thing the pods make the carbs easy to remove...
Was wondering about the accel. pump possibly causing the issue, will look into it momentarily. How will I know if it is bad? Does it just have diaphragms in it? Would they cause my issues if they were leaking? Thanks again boys!
