So I bought a 1975 (I'm told 1975) Yamaha xs500, that has been chopped and cut and changed in every way that you can imagine.....it was only $200. So I cant get it to start, and I had spark at both cylinders, so I took the carbs off, they were full of yellow jelly...cleaned everything, jets, etc. put them back on last night and now it still wont start and i only have spark on one cylinder. I have never got too involved in engine repair, but my guess is, the only thing it could be is a spark/points issue...right? I dont really know where to go from here and I dont want to do more harm than good. It turns over really well with electric start....I dont know...help please... Thanks -Joe

Do not know anythign abotu the 500, I assume it uses the same wasted spark as the 1100? So your coil would be good, and now it is up to the high tens wire and the plug to make spark?
I would start with a compression check just to be sure though. The old three required, fuel, spark, and compression.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!
