XS850 shifter schematic

I bought this bike yesterday and the PO had torn the right side apart about 4 years ago.He found a spring is broken.He even had the new spring.It looks like maybe I could have to split the case to get to it?So I want to find pics of this before I do anything in case there is easier access.
He claims this thing ran great,the shifter just didnt work right.I got it for $100.
Worst case scenario I can part it out for way more than that.
I search the net for Xs850 forums but only found one and it wasnt very good.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
