  • Kawasaki Voyager 1200 - Dies on Right Turn

    Looking for some assistance...

A friend has a '92 Kawasaki Voyager 1200 that he bought in pieces. He has been able to put it back together and get it running, with only one major hiccup...it dies every time you make a right turn.

It would seem to be tied in with the movement of the steering and my guess is a wiring issue of some sort. Have done a visual inspection and haven't found anything obvious, except that someone has done something with the wiring on it in the past as it does not have the original heat shrink or tape over wire cluster going down right handlebar. Possibly did something with the starter button wiring or the kill switch. Not sure what or which one.

Looking for some basic guidance as far as:
    - Where to look first (i.e. definitely wiring??)
    - Most likely causes (ground-related?? kill switch circuit??)
    - Anything else that might seem relevant

That is pretty much all I have on it. Let me knwo if additional info is needed. Thank you in advance!!

I would think John is correct. Something twisting or pulling on the kill switch wiring, or the ignition switch wiring. Does the display lights go out also like the key was turned or just the engine dies?

Also, possibly a poorly mounted tip over switch if it has one?

My special did this when I first got her. It turned out to be the connector for the main switch. When you turn the bars, the conector would pull apart or flex enough to break the circuit. I think I eventually replaced the switch, but I remember using a cable tie to keep the connector together for a while and that seemed to work.

FWIW, the problem is not uncommon with Vulcan 750s, with the forks pulling on the switch harness, but I don't think the ignition switch on the Voy is on the upper triple clamp.
