  • Float height

    I need the float setting for a 77 650xs. I am cleaning a set of carbs for a friend and need info on carbs. The bike will start and run but when you twist the throttle for more gas it dies.

    Yamaha 650 twins, 1970-1982

    11. Refer to Figure 11 and measure the distance
    (A) indicated. It should be as specified in
    Table 1, Bend the tang which contacts the inlet
    needle to get the correct measurement. Both
    floats should have the same measurement. Bend
    the connecting bar to level the floats if necessary.

    Table 1 CARBURETOR FLOAT LEVEL
    1970-1979 0.95 in. (24mm)

    1980 and later 1.07 in. (27.3mm)

      That looks to be to the gasket Face (without gasket).?

      Also, increasing/raising the height will Lean it out?
      It puts the float lower into the bowl, so it shuts off the gas sooner to the needles.

        in relation to the pic,
        if you raise the height of the float say from 24 to 25 it will lean the mixture out, less fuel in the bowl, lower the height will richen the mixture.
        You might also want to check out the idle circuit for any blockages.
        check the height without the gasket.

          AH, found my problem...my scale I printed out to measure the level wasn't accurate and was about 2-3mm off when I wet my floats, I thought I was at 25, but only 22-23mm, that's why my plugs are fouling out (too rich).

          Will advise if I fixed it or not this weekend. I triple checked them with a go/no go gauge I made and used my digital calipers to make sure !! (Duh, should have done that to begin with. )

            Definately the problem on my 1100. It runs great now! Even the low end hesitation is almost gone.
