chain adjustment

hey, i have a freind who has a 1998 yamaha fzr 600r with about 7000 miles on it, what we are tryin to find out it how much play should there be in the chain?

ancient wisdom sez 3/4" total at the tightest point with the suspension compressed so that the sprockets and the swingarm pivot are in a straight line.
