  • Carb kit questions

Does anyone know of a place I can get some carb kits? Need them for a 1980 XS850 Special. It's the tripple.
Need to stay away from K&L. I found Georgefix on ebay but didn't know if those kits are K&L or other? Waiting on email from him about that. Thought someone my know of somewhere else to try. Also does anyone here have a extra choke plunger that would be willing to sell. Would also need the little plastic cap and c-clip that goes with it.

    Any help would be great!

I got some from www.carbkitscapital.com. Pretty cheap, but I'm not that impressed with the quality of the float valves for the '79.

Anyways at 14.95 per carb I still got the bowl gasket, needle valve, pilot jet, main jet, idle screw, float vlave and seal.

      Thanks egsols,

I had talked to a Robert over at motorcyclescarbs.com I think. Anyway I was asking him about their kits they had listed. He said they were K&L. When I told him about the troubles with them on the 11 he informed me about the pilot jets was wrong in the kits for the 11. But they were fine for the 850. Well anyway I was going to buy them from him but he was out so I bought them from Georgefix. Got all 3 for 60 with shipping. I looked at your link but didn't see any kits. Just needle seats and bowl gaskets. But I plan on looking later to see what all they do have.

Sorry, ccogswel, I assumed that since they had them for the 11 they would also have some for the 850. Had a quick look on their site but didn't see any complete kits.

Yeah I looked but didn't see anything. The reason I asked was I had trouble with a K&L kit for my 11 a few years ago. And now that I was rebuilding these carbs for this 850 I was worried. They were the only ones to list a kit with the jet's I need that go in the bowl. They are pushed in and held into place by rubber o-rings. And trying to get them out mess's them up as you don't have much to grab with to pull. I had never seen anything like this set up. I can't believe Yamaha used these carb's for these bikes. I feel they short changed it bad. But I do thank you for the link as now I have a place to get cheep kits for the 11.

You don't need a kit. You need bowl gaskets, float valves and to clean the jets you already have. Don't waste your money on crap kits.

I wish I could. But the jets in the bowls on these carbs are pressed in and held in place by a rubber o-ring. There is just a very tiny lip to grab to pull out with. Well when you pull and your pliers slip off after a few times things get messed up. It's just three jet's in the bowl area. The other 4 jets are in between the two parts of the carb that bolt together. 3 piece carbs. Those I don't have to replace. If it runs like crap I'll try to smooth up the old jets to where they will seal right. I guess I'll find out. The thing that sucks is the jets for these carbs are no longer available from Yamaha. And it seem's like the only place I was able to find them was from K&L. I hope I get lucky with this. It sure is a pain to pull these carbs with the air box on. I'll never complain about the old 11 again. Atleast with them you can remove the air box first. Not on the 850. You have to pull or pry the carbs out first. That's a pain in the rear.
