  • Help Pleasssssssseeeeeee!!!!

    Hey everyone!!

I just picked up half a Yamaha. Early 80's and my guess would be 83.

The frame tag was half rubbed out but the # is "JYA12R004CA003478"

What in the world is this????? I don't have 83 and 84 microfiche for the xs400. I think it's an XS400 Maxim something. But I don't know for sure and I can't find anything on the web specific to tracking down tag #'s.

Anyone that knows what this is exactly for sure including the exact year, would be very much appreciated. I don't think I'd go so far as to say... Here's my 81 Midnight Special 1100 but they would certainly get my vote for the next US Presidency.

    Thanks

I was running an '83 XS 400 Maxim when I got the XJ. Two versions of the 400 were produced concurrently, the Maxim and the Seca. Later had slightly different mufflers and a 6-speed transmission, but shop manual was the same for both bikes. I believe my Maxim's first series numbers were JYA.

Note the lask of rear shocks; the suspension is a monoshock (under the seat) rather than the more conventional dual-shock set-up. Rear tire size is the same as most XS/XJ models, 130-90-16 on a tubeless rim. (Yes, I know a few XS Standards rode on a 17 inch rim.)

I sold this one a few yars ago before I moved to Arizona, so can't go check all the specifics. Put a lot of miles on this bike (40K+) and often regret selling it.

Microfiche and shop manual should still be available from Yamaha.

Any Yamaha dealer can run the number and pull up the fiche. Then you are sure. The State thinks my XS500 is a 79, but they are wrong.
