    Just First Gear

    Help me out here guys,

    Our 1980 Kawazaki KZ1000 wont go into any gear except 1st and nutral.

    here is the back ground

    i was on my way to work this morning on the KZ and the clutch cable snapped. so i limped it back home using the RPM's to shift.....got back from work and i have an extra clutch cable and went ahead and put it on, was running through everything before going for a spin to adjust the cable and i cannot shift into second while the bike is off or on or while rocking it back and forth on or off.......what could be the problem?

    Hi G-L,

    I have been caught out by this too; some Kwaks WON'T shift beyond first with the engine off; It has to be running.

    The one I repaired would ONLY move into 2nd when rolling; My KZ-owning buddies could not understand why I was confused..... They are ALL like that!

    Just as well Yam don't do it that way; My bike has NO first gear! LOL! LOL!

      It may very well be like that. i dont ever remember running through the gears with it just sitting there. I did have the bike on tho and shifted to first rolled it back and forth to try to go into second while it was running.....may be i need to take it over creeping speed that i did with my feet in the garage and over 3 feet too.

        put it back together and actualy took it down the road and it worked.....just like you said.... the clutch cable is a bit too long about 18 inches order a new one this morning. should have it next week.

          so does the story of the guy who rebuilt a KZ tranny that worked perfectly because he didn't know that beat the story of the guy who cut his XS11's wiring harness up into short pieces looking for the open circuit that stopped his headlight turning on with the ignition?

                Man why would anyone do that. They have obviously never push started a bike.
