Can I bypass the battery on 73 dt125

When I was a kid, my dad somehow bypassed the battery on an old two stroke 80 yamaha similar to the dt125 I bought for my wife. I only payed 50 dollars for the bike and dont want to spend anymore money on it until I know my wife enjoyes riding her own bike. I.e--NO NEW BATTERY IF I DO NOT HAVE TO!

If anyone has any ideas on how I might bypass the battery and run off the mag/gen that would be awesome. Like a snowmobile.

I did it back in 73 when I was racing MX. Don’t remember for sure but I think I just took the battery out. Remove the battery leads or tape them up so they don’t short out. Head light was very dim at idle but it ran fine. Won’t cost you anything to try it.

If you want the lights to still work, be bright and not flicker too much you need to connect a battery eliminator. They are sold commercially but it's just a big capacitor. You can get one at most surplus stores or ham swap meets, something larger than 10,000 MFD at 40 VDC or higher. That will work on most bikes that have the ignition running directly off the magneto separately from the lighting circuit. It won't work if the alternator requires battery power like the XS1100 does or if the ignition runs off the battery.
