    Opinions on the Yam FJ1100 - 1200?

    Hi,
I've seen a few of these fairly cheap out there and they look pretty cool. The use the in-line 4 cylinger as the XS11.
Any opinions or experience with them?

    FJ 1100

Yea, me too. Here is my new 85 FJ - Bought from original owner last weekend, only 11,000 mi. for 1000$. I couldn't resist. Needs the carbs cleaned, new tires and a battery. It is very clean. I have been looking around the 'net for a forum like this one but nothing yet. Any tips would be appreciated.
    thanks,
    Andy

Great bikes. I had a 1200 once. Only problem I had were vibrations in footrests and handlebar which make your hands and feet go numb after a while (3500-4500rpm which sadly was at cruising speed). That was the main reason to sell it.
The older models have different rubbermounting of the exhausts/footrests and the problem will be worse on them.
Some years (1991) later i bought the triump trophy 1200 which was very much the same, bit more torque, better brakes, no vibrations at all. Still own that triumph! My guess is they will be a little bit more expensive as the FJ now.

Nice grab Andy, it looks like it was very well taken care of. The stuff you mention that needs done is minimal, sounds as if you'll be on the road soon.

        Math,
I wonder if changing out the handlebar for a longer one and dampening it would help with the vibration issue? Riding position forces you to lean forward and press against the bar.

          Great choice!

          I love mine!

Other than the typical problems (stuck floats and leaking petcocks) the only other thing you have to watch out for is slipping gear, but the Dremel fix works just as well on FJs as it does on XSes... Uses the same main bearings as the XS too... so if you luck into a set... your fixed for fixes... should you need them...

Quick, responsive... and will leave most vehicles in the dust...
          he he he
Plus... added bonus of being classified as a sport tourer rather than a sport bike keeps the insurance low...

Ha, I was waiting for that. You should have seen it before I "cleaned up" to make room for the FJ.
It's all good stuff... for real.

Love my FJ, I have had XS's for 25 years and a few different FJ's in the last 10 years. As much as I like the XS, The FJ is my choice on the road. I really never noticed that the vibration was any worse than the XS. One day(and night) I rode the FJ 1000 miles. Hope you enjoy yours. Tom

FJs rank very high on my 'Schwing' scale.
I put a lot of miles on a '93 (is that the silver and blue one with ABS?)...anyway, it was a great bike and I loooooved that thing.

Don't know if you've seen this:

                    FJ1100 site

There isn't nearly the support system for the FJ as there is for the XS... but you can still find some good information at the site.

(You'd probably still get better info and more support for the FJ at this XS site... but ya never know.)

                            I always wanted a FJ1200, in blue ... grrr !

Then I got my ST11 and the urge subsided ..... hmmmm !

But they remain great bikes, a buddy here has one and we're going for a long ride soon ... if Spring ever comes to the PNW.
