  • No Idle on '99 Kawasaki ZX11

Currently doing some carb work for a friend on a '99 Ninja ZX11 (ZX1100D7) with Keihin CVK-D 40 carbs.

Had to totally rebuild the carbs due to old gas left in tank. Removed all jets and needles, cleaned, then reassembled. Used some K&L rebuild kits (needle & seat, pilot screw o-ring, and bowl gasket) and original jets. Set the pilot screws to 2-3/4 turns out.

Reassembled and performed an initial carb sync but cannot get to idle without 1/2 choke.

Also, appears that idle speed adjust screw/cable may be problem - have to turn in 3/4 of travel BEFORE it engages the lever for the butterfly valves.

Any help or input is appreciated.

    Ok.
It won't idle unless the choke/enrichener circuit is being used.
That means it's not getting enough fuel from the idle circuit.
You may need to tear into those carbs again.
Now, on the other foot.... problems mit der idle adjust screw cable system.
Might not idle if it's not set properly. By this I mean... the butterflies have to be open a little bit for it to idle. You may have the idle mechanically set too low.
Will it idle(at an idle speed) by regulating it using the throttle grip?
If it will hold an idle(maybe around 1,100 RPM) by using the throttle grip but dies when you release it, then the idle speed, at the cable, needs to be turned up.
If it won't idle offa choke, either on it's own, or by using the throttle grip, then it's carb related, meaning idle mixture circuit, etc.
May even have a vacuumn leak?

      thanks for the guidance Prom.

will *try* to hold ~1100rpm idle with throttle first then check for vacuum leaks.

course it runs like cr@p without the airbox - and there is NO access to the business end of the carbs with the airbox installed.

really hate to remove the carbs again as the push-pull throttle cables are a PAIN to remove/install.
