    SHAFTY

i KNOW THAT THE XS750 HAD A TYPE OF CV JOINT WITH DIFF SPLINE#S BEFORE GOING U-JOINT LIKE THE XS11...i WILL CLARIFY THAT YOU COULD USE THE XS750 OR XS11 FD WITH THE ROYAL STAR SHAFT....THE 20MM EXTRA GIVES ME A HEADS UP THAT THE ROYAL STARS FD PINION DRIVE WILL HAVE THE SAME RECESSED SPLINES JUST LIKE THE XS750 FD

      gettin' the shaft

bidding on a Royal Star drive shaft and no access to pc during final 4 hours of an ebay auction - won with a $20 bid now the eternity for delivery - gives me some time to make room for some real work.

        royal shaft

got the royal star drive shaft today...yesterday.

        376mm or ~ 14-13/16" and "Yamaha standard" splines on BOTH sides - 21-25 (yoke-pinion)

now time to get to work on the pivot/pivot plate, and procure the mono shock and hardware.....just a thought, but would the cheaper R1 mono shock be sufficient for this swingarm/rear tire combo?

          monoshock

Hey Brian, IMHO the R1 shock is perfect if mounted just like I have it on one side. If you are going to put it behind the battery box and use the Star's S/A mounting points I would use the Hayabusa shock. The reason is that these type shocks are set up for the linkage ratio (from the linkage/dogbones) compared to the xs11's simple compression dynamics. If you could get the Star's shock, linkage/dogbones then you would have a little easier swap....chop

            Star shaft

Awesome! that is the ticket. The extra 4'' for the swingarm and the extra 5/8" for the recess....You won't need a spacer.....good job

              heads up

The royal star changed from a bottom mounted "pull" shock to a top mounted "compress" shock 98' were pull and 2003 were compress....the early pull style would let you keep the battery stock as I remember....but if you are already relocating battery like I did, then you can go with the later stle compression setup and use a Hayabusa shock....just wanted to clarify.....Chop

                Royal Star mono shock

thanks for the heads up on the different shocks...I had noticed the linkage changed as early as '01 on some of the Royal Star models.

was reviewing some old posts and came across this again

do you recall the pivot to axel measurment? I'm still waiting for an email response on the length of the shaft...btw, the v star comes stock with a 170/80-15 rear tire....beginning to reconsider the royal star swing arm *IF* the v star gives me enough stretch...but what is enough?

                  vstar length

dont recall exact measurement but longer than the xs11 S/A....Coworker will ride his vstar 650 to work tomorrow and I'll be in the parking lot with a tape measure for sure.....chop....just put on the Royal S/A and you could get away with a R1 or hayabusa shock mod as beefy as the arm is with full gear and extra rider even....My $.02

seems every time I try to make any progress, my health puts matters into perspective...just got released from the hospital due to some heart troubles, will be taking it slow for several days....promise progress pics soon.

still have not completely stripped bike or relocated left pivot plate...have just received the V Star 1100 Custom rear fender that I will be using and impatiently scouring ebay for a V Star 1100 gauge cluster for one of the two V Star 1100 tanks that will be put on the bike. also been agonizing over the rear wheel, either the Royal Star or the V Star 1100....hey, trying to keep it all Yamaha XStar 1100

                        V Star 650

well looks like I may be able to provide dimensions first hand on that V Star 650 swingarm as I seem to have won one on ebay for $27 while I was in the hospital I had placed a low bid last week.

and, of all things, my RN rides a Royal Star so we chatted quite a bit....especially as he was reviewing the release papers - no driving - and I argued that you don't "drive" a bike, you "ride"

                          hope you are o.k.

good news on the v-star swingarm. It was hard to get an accurate measurement (pivots) off my friend's 650 v-star with the S/A on the bike....take care of yourself....Omega-3 fish oil and vit. B12 is the best for heart health.....chop
