extra 4 inches

based on my Royal Star s/a measurements, the Royal Star drive shaft *SHOULD* be 100mm (+ or - 2mm) longer than the XS11 shaft.

no access to ebay from work, will check when I get home tonight ~ 11pm.

on those measurements, if your asking about the bolt pattern for the final drive - I did not measure. but I did verify it is the EXACT same dimensions as the XS11. so, I can use the XS11 final drive then depending on rear wheel (17", 16", or 15") and final drive ratio of the Royal Star, can swap to gas sipping later.

ebay RS shaft

the ebay Item is at 50 bucks with 2 days left (THIS IS FOR A SHAFT AND FD!!!). WOW, that is what I suspected that you could put any F/D on you wanted...But I do remember that the FJR & R-S F/Ds drive hubs set a little more towards the centerline. You could widen the rear xs11 wheel and easily put a spacer in between.....

Royal Star shaft & FD

thanks for the heads up. same seller also has the rear wheel that i've decided to try to get for cheap as well.

for everyone else, ebay Item number: 260112602822 is a Royal Star s/a with just under 2 days left - and < $12.00

email

I would email him and see if he has the whole rear end....I have done that before and the seller threw in everything for a few extra bucks, not to mention the shipping savings...JAT...BTW I think you would be happier with that wheel as compared to the FJR, at least it is much easier to make a spacer between the RS wheel than the FJR wheel....Chop

homemade

I just remembered that I did even think of a way to make the homemade spacer needed to set the left pivot bolt out. Just a 1/2 inch thick (maybe 2ea) nut m22 x 1.5 welded to the 1/4 plate that welds to the outter pivot bolt housing, would do the trick....and give you plenty of room for the Royal Star S/A....chop

pivot plate

been busy with both jobs, haven't had time to work on bike. will be cleaning out garage this weekend to gain back some work/play space, then won't have any excuses for slow progress.

was thinking same thing about pivot plate - weld nut to plate, center plate, then weld in place. also, was wanting to have Royal Star drive shaft on hand before starting the cuts & welds.

after further search, appears that the 96-up Royal Star final drive MAY be the same ratio as the 86-93 Venture Royale at 2.57:1 - afraid you are correct in this being too low even with the Royal Star 15" rear wheel.

BTW, Yamaha's model # designation for the 86-93 Venture Royale and the 96-up Royal Star is the same: XVZ1300. Wonder if the two driveshafts are same length with different u-joint splines 1NL-46172-00-00 vs 4NK-46172-00-00

shafts & FD's

You will soon be the drive guru....I am assuming all FD's will bolt up to the shaft....So an XS750 may be your ticket....I know what you mean about space. I sold a bunch of crap (including two running vehicles in the last couple months) I have plenty of room to tinker with my daily driver. If you are able, get a measurement for the vstar 1100 shaft....I am very curious of it's length....

Final Drive numbers

well, looked at the WRONG numbers originally. Here is what I've found thus far: (course xschop is the one that is responsible for this)

YEAR/MODEL..............FD RING/PINION
77-79 XS750..............32/11 (2.909)
78-81 XS1100............33/10 (3.3)
82 XJ1100..................33/10 (3.3)
83-85 XVZ1200..........33/10 (3.3)
86-93 XVZ1300..........33/10 (3.3)
86-99 XV1100............32/11 (2.909)
85-UP VMX1200.........33/9 (3.667)

83-85 XVZ1200 Venture Royale
86-93 XVZ1300 Venture Royale
85-UP VMX1200 V-Max
96-UP XVZ1300 Royal Star
99-06 XVS1100 V Star

still have yet to confirm FD for Royal Star and V Star (1100) but its beginning to look like they might be the 33/10 as well. also, still need to confirm drive shaft lengths and splines - seems Yamaha doesn't keep specs on these.

if I can count correctly .....

YEAR/MODEL..............SHAFT SPLINES (LENGTH)
78-81 XS1100............21/25 (257mm)

mo' drive info

got the Royal Star and V Star 1100 fd info from Yamaha's Owner's Manuals on-line.

YEAR/MODEL..............FD RING/PINION
96-up XVZ1300..........33/10 (3.3)
99-up XVS1100..........32/11 (2.909)

the following info on the Royal Star drive shaft was via ebay correspondence with seller.

YEAR/MODEL..............SHAFT SPLINES (LENGTH)
96-up XVZ1300..........20/25 (14-13/16")

I'm hoping that the seller is mistaken on both the length and the u-joint splines. Seems that the Royal Star shaft may be TOO LONG (by 20mm). Gotta get some info on the V Star 1100 drive shaft.

Also, began to look for a 'straight swap' u-joint that has the 20 splines - the XJ650/750 u-joint may work, otherwise will have to modify the XS1100 u-joint.

xschop, do you recall the number of splines on the XS750 shaft? hard to tell but looks like the XS750 u-joint is similar design to XS1100 except the rubber boot is 'part' of u-joint. the XS850 uses the same u-joint as the XS1100.

hold your horses

I think the guy is wrong on the front tooth #s for the shaft....and I think the extra 20mm is GOOD because IIRC, I saw the schematic where the Royal Star's FD had the same recess in the pinion drive coupling as the XS750's. This is why I had to use the 5/8" (@17mm) collar spacer for the 750 swap. (I'M ASSUMING THE 20MM IS THE DIFF. OF COMPARISON TO THE XS11 SHAFT?)So there would be your perfect setup....

...so,
1) cannot use the XS1100 FD with this setup.
2) need to either use: a. the Royal Star FD with same ratio as the 1100 (33/10) and gain the electronic speed sensor connection for the V Star 1100 tank and speedo; or b. the lower ratio XS750 FD (32/11) and figure out how/where the speed sensor connects on the V Star 1100 then adapt to the XS1100.

yeah, was really hoping that the seller miscounted the front shaft splines. still watching and waiting for the last min. before gettin' the shaft

so, you thinkin' that the front shaft splines on the XS750 were unique (before they 'standardized' on a 21-25 pattern)?

xschop, is the recess in the pinion gear coupling? if so, appears the V Max 33/9 (3.667) FD has the same recess......
