take a ride on heavy metal

got the '98 royal star swingarm yesterday. still on the prawl for the driveshaft. in the mean time here are some measurements (for comparison, XS1100 is listed in parentheses).

        Weight: 15.0 lbs (8.6 lbs)
        Pivot-Pivot: 327mm (297mm)
        Pivot-Axle: 611mm (511mm)
        Pivot Tube O.D.: 56mm (49mm)

no need for s/a bracing even with the additional 3.9 in. of stretch as this s/a is designed to support a mono shock as well

          pivot

that's on the money...move it over to the left on the xs frame by 25-30mm and you have an extra 50-60mm tire width....so a 180 would be easy....remember to make the middle drive spacer the same thickness!

so excuse my ignorance, but how does the royal star swing arm enable you to use a wider tire? isnt the shaft coming out of the xs transmission in the same place? and the xs750 final drive, which you'd have to find some wide rim that the final drive would bolt onto. i'd like to hear an explanation on how this would actually work. not that i'd do it, i'm stuck on a chain drive but i always like learning new things.

No problem, I'll try to explain. To the best of my knowledge, you have to space the middle gear housing out from the case. And the royal star swing arm does not use a shaft housing like the XS(which limits tire width) . The Royal Star has a soft tail style swingarm and has an external shaft(skinnier than the xs shaft housing) which gives you additional clearance.
Hope that helps. Chop you out there? Maybe you can correct me if I am wrong or explain it better.

                STAR METHOD

NO,THE ROYAL STAR IS INTERNAL SHAFT...I EXPLAINED TO BRIAN D HOW TO GO ABOUT IT. YOU JUST HAVE TO MAHINE A 1/4 INCH THICK PLATE WITH A M22 X 1.5 THREAD PATTERN IN THE MIDDLE TO TAKE THE STOCK XS11 PIVOT BOLT....THEN YOU JUST WELD IT TO THE OUTSIDE OF THE LEFT FRAME PIVOT HOUSING USING A M22 X 1.5 THREADED ROD FOR CENTERING.( BETTER REINFORCE THIS AREA WITH SMALL BRIDGE STRUTS AFTER WELDING THE PLATE ON)....AFTER THIS ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS CUT/GRIND OFF THE ORIGINAL INNER PIVOT BOLT PLATE AND STICK YOUR ROYAL STAR SWINGARM IN....IT'S REALLY EASIER THAN YOU THINK...THEN YOU MACHINE A MIDDLE DRIVE SPACER TO MATCH.....30MM IS WHAT I WAS GOING TO DO BECUASE THE ROYAL STAR SWINGARM PIVOTS EXCEED THE XS11'S BY THAT MUCH....I WAS GOING TO USE AN FJR1300 REAR WHEEL AND SPACE IT ACCORDINGLY...

                  rear wheel

haven't decided on the rear wheel yet. debating between the 15 x 4.0" Royal Star and the 17 x MT 5.5" FJR. really would like to have the 16" XS11 Special wheel widened for a 180.

will be meeting with a friend who is on temporary leave from over-seas. he use to be in the custom hodrod business - was paying $145.00/wheel for a company to split and widen auto rims.

                    Sorry about he bad info
I thought the royal star had a swing arm like this

I wonder if you could use one of these. its from a Vstar 650. I happen to have one of these bikes , so I ll do some measuring and let ya know. Be pretty cool if you could use the whole rear end swingarm, drive shaft, and tire/wheel. My Vstar has a 170 on it right now, and I am sure it could go up to 180. Any way sorry bout the bad info.

                      V Star

really interested in seeing the measurements for that s/a - especially the pivot to axle distance.
also not sure if there is any difference in rear end between the v star 650 and 1100.

Not sure either, But I'll post some measurements Mon. Pivot to axle, and pivot width. And I ll take a look and see how the shaft connects to the middle gear. Later

                          (laughing)

that v-star s/a is actually an inch shorter than the xs11 (10 3/4) from the pivots that's why I kept looking and found the royal star...that one sets way to left on the v-star frame....in short, although it could be made to work like the R Star & setting it to the left then you would have to lengthen it on the right by @ 2 inches (not fun)....if you went through all this trouble you could just cut the xs11 s/a and lengthen pivot points...but stretch would remain the same....Brian D has the missing link in hand...chop

was more interested in finding out if the driveshaft between the V Star and Royal Star are the same length - as it seems there is more availability for the V Star driveshaft.

rechecked Yamaha's site and looks like too many differences between the V Star 650 and V Star 1100 for any 650 measurements to be of use.

appears that the V Star 1100 and Royal Star use the same final drive - only difference is the addition of mounting bosses for the V Star s/a.
Does anyone know the final drive ratio for either of these bikes?

xschop, check out the Drive Shaft Gear Coupling (#27: 22U-46123-00-00) for the V Star 650 BikeBandit lists for $16.82 May have to pick one up to see if it could be used to create custom length driveshaft from 2 XS11 shafts. that royal star s/a has a much larger shaft tube so clearance should not be an issue.

                              coupler

may work if the splines are the same...I would just hunt down a royal star shaft and keep it simple....so you need to get an extra 4 inches from the xs11 shaft huh?

                                ????

i wouldn't attempt the coupler either...looks like it locks onto the special pinion drive that the v-star has....depending on the inner RS housing clearance I was going to just have the rear yoke lengthened by 4 iches and use the xs1100 shaft....driveline guy quoted me 35 bucks IIRC....
