Another old yamaha has been saved from the backwoods of NC. Picked this 80 XJ650 up yesterday from deep in the backwoods. Its been sitting outside under a plastic cover for about a year. Lots of corrosion but this on will run the backroads again. Needs new mufflers as these are holed on the undersides. Anyone have a set they are willing to let go of.

Need INfo
Does any on have a wiring diagram for a 80 XJ 650 that they can up load? Also what's the float level suppose to be set at? Manuals on the way but I'd like to get a jump on this thing. Carbs are a mess and the starter was burnt to a crisp. Parts are on the way but its so slow!!!!!!

Thanks, Your right this thing is a challange, I've got the carbs cleaned up and waiting to go back togeather. We are in the collecting parts stage. As soon as some stuff gets here I hope to get some heat in this engine. PO said it ran six months ago but I dought it by the amount of corrosion I've found EVERYWHERE! Restoreing this one for the brother inlaw, he really needs to get up here and do some rubbing on this chrome. LOLwingnut

Same carbs as my wife's xj650j, manual only shows the float level setting by connecting tubing to the float bowl drain and setting the level in the tubing at the bottom of the carb body / float bowl flange. Looks like a real pain to actually adjust it ie assemble - check - disassemble - tweak - repeat.

Thanks Steve so its like the 81SH for float level. I can deal with that. Well some progress was made. The starter parts were “reworkable.” New brushes and it spins the motor over. Pulled a no carbs compression check. 90, 84, 95, 90. Not bad for a machine that’s got 25K on it and has been sitting for a year and a half. My 1100 was about the same and after 6 months riding its up where it should be. Checked spark and got good results from all 4 wires. Now the questions. With the key turned on the tail light comes on as it should. No lights on the panel. No neutral light ever and when I crank it the low oil pressure light only comes on as the starter is cranking and stays on the whole time the starter is engaged. Where can I hook up a direct reading pressure gage on this engine so I can know I have pressure or not. Also the neutral light really has me scratching my head. Anybody else run into this?wingnut

Check the switch for the neutral light, and the oil pressure, side stand, if it has one, etc. It is probably the "bad connection" problem from sitting so long.Ray Matteis

Wingnut,
I may have a complete headlight assembly (Don't know if the bulb is any good) let me know if you need it. I don't have use for it. It was in with a box of parts I bought on ebay.

Headlight
Thanks Ed, All I need is the ring but would love to have it. The one I have is caved in pretty badly. I'm converting the head light and turn signals to the XS style. Fork ears and headlight bucket fit just fine. PM me. Learned yesterday that thats not a oil pressure light like on the XS. Thats a low oil level light on the polit box. Has any one figured out were to hook up a direct reading pressure gage on this engine? I'd really like to get a reading on the pressure before I try and light this thing up.

Hey WingNut,
I looked at the Fiche online, but I couldn't see any prominent oil galleys like on the XS11, but on the bottom left of the engine just below the level of the crank, there's a cap bolt and O-ring that appears to seal off the end of an oil galley? You may be able to fit it with a piece of tubing and a pressure sensor gauge?
Or, have the valve cover off, and the plugs out, and once you get the starter working, spin the motor over for a bit and see if you see oil getting to the topend, cams? If so, then you can feel pretty sure that the pump is working putting the oil thru the engine to the topend, should be okay to fire it up!

Thanks TC. I saw the gally plug and figured it might be my best option. I'll rig a pressure gage up tonight and see what happens.wingnut

Found a pretty good salavage yard in Phoenix. Bills Cycle salavage down off of 16th Street. Great place for finding replacement chrome parts as there isn't rust all over everything like we have back east. There must be 30 XS in the yard and twice that many XJs of different displacements. A lot of parts in the warehouse also. You have to dig around some but thats half the fun. You could put together a set of pipes from their stock very easy and they would look pretty nice. Got a few things I needed for the XJ project. Picked up a starter and the guy at the counter says those are $100 you know. Told him it was'nt worth that to me and he could keep it. A hundred dollars for a starter? He must have been out in the sun to longwingnut

I'll bet if the bike had a kickstart the electric starter motoer would be $5.00.
If you have to have it it costs more.Pat Kelly
