can anybody help, i have a xj 600 diversion with only 9000 miles on the clock, the only thing is when pushing the starter ignition the oil light comes on and stops the bike from starting, ive given it an oil and filter change, spark plugs, battery, ive checked the switch, all ok, i checked the solonoid it had a bit of crustation around the live terminal so i cleaned it and put it back together, but still the same thing, is there a way of checking the solonoid in any way, i did jump the 2 terminals and it fires up 1st time, but doing it from the switch, the oil light comes on. can anybody help please.

Just a thought the XJ900 Dimension I have worked on had a switch in the clutch handle which meant it would only start with the clutch pulled in....if it has one make sujre it is working.....easy test is to make sure it's in neutral unplug the switch from the clutch and use a piece of wire to jump across the connector it should start with the start button...if it does the switch is fautly...if it doenst the problem exixsts most likely in the solenoid...
Cheers....hope my 2cents worth helps somewhat....1982 XS1100R

-I just love the look on their faces when you leave them standing in the dust after they've lined you up on your XS.

Also check the sidestand switch.
If the oil light is not on when you turn the ignition on, its something wrong with it. When you start the bike, it has to go off.
You definetly have an electrical problem. Check if you have all the connectors connected to the right place.
Follow the oil sensor wire and see where it goes.
LPIf it doesn't have an engine, it's not a sport, it's only a game.
(stole that one from I-dont-know-who)

found the fault, the wire that runs to the solonoid from the starter switch, not the live or the earth, the smaller of the wires which is coloured blue with a white stripe, it is reading 10 volts when ignition is turned on, then it reads 0 when the starter switch is pushed, so ive had to by pass it with a kill switch between so i can use the bike until i finally find the fault, thankyou all for your interest.
