  • Winter Project XS 850

    OK,

Lots of questions, but here's the story so far. A basket case '80 XS 850 Special. The guy went to rebuild the motor and as far as I know, did the bottom end right, but he ended up puting a 750 head on it which has smaller valves, but he was told they are interchangeable. I need to ask him if he used the cams of the 850 or the 750... anyone know of a difference or which would be better for him performance-wise? Anyway, he had it running for a couple hundred miles, but said it wasn't right. He thought carbs, but everyone else told him timing, so he went in and readjusted the timing (No idea how many times) and it has never ran again. It has currently had sit-itis for 4-5 years.
I am currently tearing into the carbs. I have them apart. All the jets have little O-rings around them. Will the general ones I find at the hardware store work for them? Also, someone has mufffed up the tops of the jets some trying to grab them with plyers. Is this something that has to be flat, flush, and even like the floats? It's the sides of the jets that face the bowls that don't give you much to grab on to pull them out, but doesn't appear to have any affect on the actual orifice or function of the jet.
Money, as always, is a major concern, but with this guy, it's a hard luck story, but it applies even more so to him. He has none, and I am trying to help him get going as absolutely cheaply as possible. I am also wondering about what size jets he should be running with this 750 head? The jets I am pulling out are two size 40 jets and one size 140 main jet in each carb. It would seem to me that it would run rich with the smaller valves, but I think I will add the pod filters that I have here.. that should lean it up some.

I have many more questions, but will end it here for now. Any help would be great.

The very first thing I would do is dump those Hitachi carbs, and find some Mikuni's from a 750. I don't know why Yamaha switched carbs for 1980.

Which leads us right back again to his money situation. I need to try to make due with what he has...

From what I've heard, John's advice makes economic sense. Those Hitachi carbs aren't user friendly. Rob Reil http://www.motorcyclecarbs.com is the only place I know to get good help with them and I doubt it will be cheap.

I have two of these. Petcock repair kits are crap, from what I recall. Most people on the Yamaha triples site end up putting in on/off inline petcocks, should this problem arise with the one you're working on.
As for the jets... scratches , gouges on the outside I wouldn't worry about, it's the jet hole that matters.
As for the jet o-rings, not all o-rings can stand up to gas. I'd take them to a shop and have them match up new ones from their carb parts box.

Yeah, he said he hates his petcocks. He says he replaced them at one time, but there's actually no "Off" to turn them to. Each one has a little valve like the Octo valve I despised on my bike.
The carbs actually cleaned up pretty nicely. All the holes look good. He is checking to see if he has a bank of carbs from his 750 still though, just in case. I'd personally feel more comfortable with them... but these all do the same thing I guess. I don't see anything tough about these though.. why does everyone hate them?

Off to Iowa in the morning to get my XJ Parts bike finally... See ya Sunday in the funny papers...

              Getting bad HEAD!

              Hey Tod,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news for you on your return trip, but you'll need to get a different head for it!!

The bore for the 850 is the same as the the 11= 71.5mm.

The bore for the 750 is smaller at 68.0 mm!

They both have the same stroke=68.6mm

This means the combustion chamber isn't matching up to the same diameter as the cylinders, not to mention which head gasket he used, the 750 or the 850!

Does he still have the 850 head? Why did he try using the 750? Were there bent valves on the 850, or warped, cracked??

Perhaps Andreas will have an 850 he could part with cheaply??

I didn't check to see if they used the same valves, I'll check on it!
              T.C.

PS, checked, here's the part #'s, looks like they are actually the same!
              750:

                Well,
I made it through 5 states today. I made it to Des Moines Iowa to pick up the parts XJ, then over to a buddy's house in Omaha Nebraska where I am staying the night (Or 2) before heading home. The bike has it's good points and bad... but the trip was worth the exhaust alone. The headers look nicely chromed with no blueing..... I have to wonder about the motor. Like maybe they put the exhaust on and something broke... not even enough to blue the pipes at all. So... why would you start tearing a bike apart and selling it?? Hoping it was electrical. Anyway.. Talk to you all later.

                Tod

Probably should have put this on a different post... but I'm tired.
