  • FJ whine... Help! Ideas? Opinions? ANYthing

Yes... I know... I'm married to a Guru... but he's not here and I want answers now!
    Please

The FJ speedometer (the cable - to be more accurate) is making this ungodly whine everytime I move... I took it off and lubed it yesterday as per the instructions of my resident Guru. This solved the problem once before... Other than replacing the cable (if that will even work... I don't know)... any suggestions?

The speedometer works fine, so no apparent loss of function... just the noise... which blends in with the engine noise at highway speed... but drives me NUTS while cruising around town...

    Thanks for any help!

Sometimes the bushing in the bottom of the speedo will dry out. Try putting some grease in a wallpaper syringe and injecting some up in there.

      Thank you Geezer

I'll be working on it today... I pulled it off last time but this time I just lubed the cable... it's such a pain in the backside to unscrew from the top, I didn't do it this time... that'll learn me...

      Thanks again!

Exactly what Geezer said. Mine dried out recently because I thought it was a non servicable item so I never did a thing to the gauge. The speedo drive bushing locked up and the gear drive on the wheel twisted the cale until it popped. It had been making a whining sound for a day or two.

It made a good rainy day project so I took the gauge apart and lubed up the bushing and the odometer gear drives inside. The bushing only took a few drops of light maching oil to free up again. I took the end of the broken cable that fit into the speedo and cut it off to a managable length for use in a drill motor to test the gauge before I put the thing back together. I was amazed to find that it takes over 2,000 RPM on the cable to get to 65 MPH on the gauge. So, I think I am going to make it a yearly spring tune-up thing to put a drop or two of light machine oil into the bushing at the bottom of the gauge.

          Thanks again!

That did the trick... now for my next question...
Is there a suitable replacement for the fasteners that hold the air scoops on? They have the plastic kind that work on a togglebolt like mechanism (push in on the center stem and it expands the barbs to lock in place). They get very brittle over time and tend to break (that's how I lost my last scoop).

I will have to replace at least one of them anyway (I was a little overzealous during disassembly) so might as well look at other options while I'm there...

I'm sure a trip to the parts store would give me some ideas... but thought I would ask for more expert opinions here...

          Thanks!

            WildKat,
Just go to the parts store, and pick up a handfull of the "clips". REPLACE everytime you remove the scoop, or every other time at the most. It's just cheap insurance...

              Thanks Ray

but I don't think the parts store actually carries the kind of fastener that is on there, I'll have to order them. I don't think they are all that expensive.... but I'd rather have something a little more stable and obtainable. The original style definitely needs to be replaced with each removal (even the book tells you they're cheap... not in those words though. )

Unless I misunderstood your reply... in which case... please type more s-l-o-w-l-y so that I can understand.

I'm looking for a different style than what comes on it... something that will look decent, be moderately easy to remove and can hopefully be reused... These look good... but are really a PITA because of their lack of durability.
You have to remove the scoops and air ducts in order to remove the upper cowling, so depending on how much trouble this speedo cable is going to give me (hoping it's fixed.... but just in case it's not)... I'd rather have something that I can take off and put back on again without having to replace everytime.
I could just be dreaming though...

              Thanks again!

Dzus fastners. Might take some mods to mount em but once they are there, they don't break or come loose. Usta be real common on the European/British bikes. Dennis Kirk may have them. Last batch I bought I got from Summit Racing.

So, tell me, are you one scoop or two now?

                  Thanks Keoki

I'll check them out... they look like they have some promise...

I thought I would splurge and go for two scoops. Three's too many and one's never enough...
