    Looks great!

    They're fun little bikes, enjoy!

Were you able to find an H3 headlight for it?

      She's a cutie Randy!

      Here's Scoot

This one has an H3 but has issues with burning up the bulb holder, JW.
Why thank you, yes it is old and no, I don't want a new one.

So, the '82 came with the H3 headlight? Good news, I'm trying to do a conversion from the stock ('80) bulb. It's $45 bulb!

Just checked Yammy, '82 came with large bulb, not H3. So, Naigrascoot, which headlight bucket do you have?

            thread hijack

Brain burp here, it's a H4 (9003) bulb in there, not H3, sorry.

Bucket (plastic.. maybe from an RD?), lens/reflector with "W" spring clips, H4 bulb holder affixed to the original wires and a chrome trim ring.

The lens/reflector has a city light (4w? 7w?) bulb in it too but it's not connected. Seems european in retrospect. I take it this is a homegrown set-up from some PO?

            Sorry 'bout the hijack!

Niagara, I'm fairly sure I've seen those fork ears you have as aftermarket accessories. Can't recall ever seeing anything other than metal buckets on any of the Yammy specials I've ever seen, too. Was probably a P.O. refit. One of my ears is really bent, and both my signals lean backwards at a decent angle. Haven't really worried about it since everything works, and it's symmetrical.

Mine has an H3 insert-type bulb (or maybe it is a H4 too ), like I bought for my 11. Didn't know until the other day when I went to measure it for Randy and took it apart for the first time. Sadly I can't tell who made it. Something like Tliko or something. Can hardly read it on the bulb.

The bulb is duct taped in, too. The metal clips (like on my 11) are missing. It must not get too hot though, the duct tape is still intact, and it seems to be holding it well.

The ears and bucket look pretty much exactly like yours Randy.

Hmm, I just got an idea...I think I'll get some charcoal or a crayon and see if I can get a tracing of it to see if I can read it better. Need to go by there tomorrow anyway. Will get a coupla pics too.

I have solved the mystery of the headlamp. The U.K models (and Canada) came with the H4 setup and the city light (called pilot) as stock. That expalins why Niagrscoot has that setup. The US models came with the sealed beam bulb. The UK bulb holder, w clips, etc should swap right in to my bucket/ring assembly. Now all I need is a source for UK parts. On Yammy.com I can't even look up part#'s for the UK models. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ebay UK was no help yet, but I'll keep looking.

Wes, the picture of your two XS's elsewhere gives new meaning to the question: Who's your daddy? Nice looking pair you have. They could come live in my garage.

So if you have the halogen light in your XS 400 - tell me, do you find that it still sucks for night riding? I'm pretty sure it's an H4 - the one with 3 prongs, right? Maybe it's just my aging crappy eyes but I'm pretty miserable at night...

Randy, one thing to consider with the change over to H4 is wattage. I'm running a 60W/55W at present. Being the guru that you are, do you think it would be possible/ok to move up to something brighter?

How did you find that out about Canadian and UK bikes? (I'm impressed) I haven't found a parts listing for Canuck bikes.. is there one out there?

                  Here's a current picture of Scoot;

Wow, scoot is looking good! I doubt the 400 electrical system would handle anything with higher than 60/55. Is there a higher wattage H4? Have to check that. Of corse, you could reduce the overall load by switching to LED tail and signal lights. That would alow for higher wattage headlamp, but it might melt stuff!

Well, I got by there today and looked at it again. This time I took it apart all the way (including the duct tape) and found that it isn't an insert after all, but a rebuild of an old lens with a new bulb glued into the back of the lens. It's got 3 prongs, an H4? The bulb itself through the lens looks like the H3 in my 11.

It appears I'll be needing to find a replacement myself.

Lined up next to the 11, it's just about as bright as it, but is a narrower beam. I've only ridden them a few miles each at night, so I can't say how good they are really. Neither seemed as bright as I'd like. Night riding worries me still.....people are blind enough during the day. Been avoiding it.

Scoot sure looks nice Niagara. Still haven't put that kind of effort into mine yet. I think I'm going to make my son do most of the finish work on it. It'll be his before long, after all.

I have a Haynes manual that details the differences between the UK and US models. The Clymer's probably doesn't have that info. From my experience, the Clymer's manuals don't have A LOT of info!

And, no, I have not found a parts list or fiche for the Canuck bikes, but I'm sure that if one exists, someone here will have a link!

Thanks guys.. Scoot, like any aging beauty queen looks good from afar with soft focus, soft lighting, and only from one side. The tank etc. are just rattle can jobs.

I think Mike's XS has all of the bits for a conversion to 9003/H4, fwiw, including W clips and bulb holder. It's been helpful for me that Yamaha used the same parts bin often for the 650's and 400's.
