  • Picked up a KLR 650

    XSer's,

I have been looking for a good used KLR 650 (or Suz DR650, BMW F650, XR650L or similar) for a while now and found one in this weeks swap sheet. 2000 Kawasaki KLR 650, 11K miles, all service work done, piped, jetted, tuned, new tires, inspection, ready to rock. Not perfect but a good start for me. I may have overpaid at $2500, but it seemed like a decent deal.

I have the Adirondack Park in my back yard and need something to explore the backroads and trails that cross it.

If anybody has comments or info, let me know

You may have met Doug Walker at one of the Rob Reil rallies a couple years ago. Last fall, he rode his KLR to Prudhoe Bay (sp?) then down to Anchorage where he met his wife. She rode back to Atlanta with him.

If Doug is any indication, that bike has long legs.

I remember him, I was right behind him for most of the Saturday ride. Bike would corner great, but was a little slow completing passes. Should I leave the Aprilia home and take the KLR this year??

I tried the XS1100 on 14 or so miles of forest service road last year. It was slow going. I won't be able to keep up to the KLR on that stuff.

.. i used to trail ride alot, i mean every night after work and all weekend long, every weekend, for years. i used to ride with this guy once in a while that had a KLR 650 with some good off road tires on it. that thing was fast in the woods and he could ride it all day without stopping for gas. i always road two strokes and i had to pop out of the woods once in a while to find gas. meanwhile he would just keep going. i rode the KLR once, although it didnt feel as fast as my CanAm 500, it was real easy to ride and thats why the guy didnt look as tired as i was when the day was over.
..i dont think you paid too much for your KLR, i think you're going to like it.

I was surprized to find out this bike had a 6 gallon fuel tank, at 55mpg...I can ride all day without stopping for fuel. I like the sound of that.

Nice machine... never heard any complaints

Valve Adjustment: Pull the tank, radiator fan, coil, and remove the engine to frame mount at the top of the engine above the carb. Valve cover wiggles out to the left. Remove the cam caps and tilt the cams up to remove the shims. (29mm like an XS) Watch the dowel pins on the cam caps next to the chain... don't drop them down the chain hole!
Have never had to adjust the balancer chain like the manual calls for, but then again, haven't seen one with 11,000 miles on it, either.
Don't think that you needed this info, but other than general maintenance, bike is worry free.

Hey Gary, I don't think you paid too much. 'Great looking bike.
I have the older model, a '93 KLX 650 C1. 'Back in '93 the KLX was the street legal model, the KLR was the off road model.
My '93 has 25,400 miles and only 3.2 gallon gas tank.
I replaced the Avon Gripsters with a D.O.T. approved Dunlop D606 knobby tire. The Dunlop has a little "sing" to it on the hard top but is MOST excellent off road. The Avons would spin in wet grass while "lugging" it trying to go up hill!!
Yahoo Groups have a good site to which I'm a member. It's KLX 650 but also includes the newer, KLR. Pretty good people there with alot of knowledge about the Kawasaki KLX/KLR 650's.
I bought my KLX used; Sept. will be two yrs. ago with 24,200 miles.
FWIW, I rode my 'Wing 165 miles yesterday, then took the KLX for a 40 mile ride.
The KLX is a blast to ride, sure gets alot of looks! I ride it to work and back more than I ride my other bikes to commute to work. [sure love that factory rack on the back]
Mine is pretty much stock with the exception of the Dunlops and a Supertrap, E.A.R. muffler/exhaust.
I picked up a brochure on the new 2005 KLR's. Engine wise, not much has changed compared to my '93 model. Same cc, same bore and stroke, same compression ratio.
The 35 inch seat ht. has my 30 inch inseam to the limits though!
Check out the Yahoo Group KLX650; I don't think you'll be dissapointed.
I bought the factory, Kawasaki Service Manual for mine; it's a good investment.
Enjoy your new investment; they have the torque of a farm tractor! I can lug mine down to nearly idle, twist the throttle and even with the knobby she'll spin the rear tire on hard packed gravel/dirt roads.
                    Ride Safe,
                    Greg

                      Grag,

Thanks for the history lesson . I will have to check out the Yahoo group...sounds like a good one.

Mine has street tires now so i won't be doing a lot of off-roading yet, maybe after I make a few changes.

                      Thanks,
                      Gary
