  • Wifes Bike

Finally got to go to Portland and pickup my wife's bike that my brother gave us. 82 XJ650J last registered in '92, 7620 miles on the clock.

Spent some time cleaning all the dirt and other stuff off it, and it's starting to look good.

Put in a new battery and it cranks good, just have to finish the carb cleaning to get it going.

Pretty good deal for just $1.

Check out the fuse holder. Same problem as with the 1100, (and most older bikes). The headlight on my 650 turns on and off when it feels like it.

Mail order Russian bride? That way when she's gripin' at you, (Oh... and she will) you can't understand her! And vodka is cheap! (As long as she never hears the words Grey Goose)

And Steve.... would be happy to double your investment for you. Heck... I'd go ahead and give you 5 BUCKS for your time! Good find and good luck.

Yea, brother already scabbed in a couple of different fuse ends. Will get replaced with something, don't know what yet though.

That is a really good bike (and really good buy!). 82 maxim was my first bike and now belongs to my brother. Obviously, it no XS11, but pretty snappy. Downside is suspension a little weak for 2 up riding(330 lbs), in my opinion.

It's for my wife to learn to ride, and shes well shy of 330 thank god.

Figure she'll be wanting an XS next year.

Amen for that. 330 was Girlfriend and me. I weigh 200 + or -10

My GF is going to start on the '88 hurricane, when I get it running. And, like your wife, will probably want an XS before too long. Good thing I have an extra one of those to get fixed up as well.

              Good luck

My wife won't ride with me. Says she's scared to look down and see road right there. After a couple bad wrecks in the last few years, maybe glad she likes a cage! I guarantee though, if she ever decided to ride, she wouldn't settle for a thousand dollar bike. I'd have to go look at a 15 thousand+ one I'm sure.
"But honey... it's only 85 dollars a month" she'd say. Yeah... for LIFE! Hang on to those gals you 2!

                  low maintenance is fantastic

You gotta lay down ground rules. Rule #856 is no dang vehicle payments. Rule #857 is especially no payments for toys.

Ha, ha, ha. (you can tell I'm not married yet!) no "ground rules", but similar thoughts... cheap is good, and payments suck. Plus, $1000 bikes are a little easier to replace than $15k bikes, if and when you go down.

On the other hand, I'll probably have $5-6k in that '80 once I get it finished...How sad is that for a free bike. Well, that's worst case scenario (I haven't gotten 'into' things to see how bad stuff is). So she'll have a 'new' bike, it just won't be new in years.

                      Maxim user group links

Hey guys! I love these little bikes too! I had a roommate with one in college and the guy he bought it from was a friend of mine that repaired bikes as a hobby. Anyway, he said those engines last forever. As proof he had 3 or 4 on the shelf from parted out bikes where the rest of the bike was toast but the engine was in great shape still. Anyway, having the typical 2nd gear problems on it as well as my XS11. I have a spare tranny for both and plan to back-cut the dogs and slots for 2nd on the XS and wonder if any of you has experienced the same on the XJ650. Also, in my searching, I was unable to find a group/site like this for the Maxim to research the answer to my repair question. Do you guys have some links?

                      Thanks,
                      Joel
