Can any of you KLR owners out there help out my buddy? He is salvaging a fire victim 650 KLR, and was asking me since I was a computer guy could I find out from the KLR folks what and where to find that thingie was that kept the cam chain from misbehaving in the KLR. He has no PC and so I offered to help out.

It's a "Doohickey" not a "Thingy."
Form that KLR FAQ site:
"Balancer chain tensioner ("Doohickey") prone to failure;
The counterbalancer tensioner arm (clamped down by the small bolt on the bottom left engine cover) has a tendency to get brittle and break."

KLR Questions
Yahoo Groups has a good KLX650 group that also includes the KLR 650.
Also Kawasaki's web site will let you bring up parts schematics and gives the part numbers. Here you can either type in the yr. and model or the VIN no. of the bike.
The KLX 650 Yahoo Group has a link to this site but you'll probably have to be a member to access this link.
Marty, you can always join this Yahoo Group and ask them your questions for your buddy. They seem to be a pretty decent bunch of guys with a good knowledge of the KLX/KLR bikes.
