Tom you need to edit your profile to let us know what you are riding. I assume you have a Standard and want to install a Special tank. Basically what'a ya got and whata ya want.
There's always a way, figure it out.

Thanks for the reply. I am bulding a 1978 yamaha xs11 and it has the large 5.23 gal tank. i would like something a little more streamlined without changing the seat. . any suggestions. i am on a strict budget.

        Gettin' Tanked!

        Hey Tom,

Budgets and Mods don't mix very well! When you roll up with that BIG ACROSS 4, not sure what kind of stealth mode you're expecting!?

Many people would kill for YOUR STANDARD Tank, cause they want the increase capacity, and would like to get rid of their TearDrop Special tank. They are a simple switch, except that you need to get the petcocks with it! ALso, the fuel sending units are different. You'll loose your GAUGE, and only have an Idiot Light signal!? IIRC, there isn't enough room in the Special tank for the Float style sending unit of the Standard!

But if you still want to do this, I'm sure if you post a message requesting a trade, that you'll get some offers from folks with Special tanks willing to trade you for your Standard Tank!

I have considered the standard tank, since I get about 104 miles out of my Special tank before the idiot tells me that it's getting close to time to walk. After much thought I decided I LOVE the sleek lines and after a hundred miles on the BC, I'm ready to stop for a few minutes, the old behind ain't as tolerant as it used to be despite the extra padding.

              Mix'n'match tanks.

              Hi Papa Gino,
My XS11SG came with both tanks. Alas the Standard tank has rust pinholes nor would the KQH seat latch down when I TI'd the
big tank. I now have a normal seat but the pinholes remain.
And my Special tank is even smaller than stock because of the huge dents that were hidden under the awful paint job I stripped off.
Also, my fuel consumption is worsened by hauling a sidecar so my red light comes on at 110km rather than 110miles which is why I carry 2 gallons of gas in a small jerrycan on the sidecar luggage rack.
All this leads up to; sure you may well need a rest, washroom, coffee etc before the Special tank runs dry but to have to plan an entire trip around never being more than 100 miles (or in my case, 100km) from a gas pump really sucks.

I hear you on having limit sorties to hundred mile intervals. Kind of puts the wilderness trips out of bounds.

I still have a lot of fun short range or not and love the sleek look. I get a lot of compliments from guys with newer bikes and I have to admit, I like old school. Most of todays Jap bikes are bad imitiations of a Harley or built for a 22 year old to tear ass around town with $5,000 worth of plastic covering up the bike.
